Shoes Win, Hearts Pick Up No. 20

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes posted their 25th victory of the season with a 62-44 win over the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces at Flora to move into the Class 2A Sweet 16, and the Effingham Hearts posted their 20th win of the season by beating the Olney Tigers 65-55 in a game heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com from the Mattoon Class 3A Regional.

Teutopolis jumped out to a 16-2 lead on Mt. Carmel and never looked back. The Shoes were up 16-4 after one quarter, 31-17 at halftime, and 43-28 after three quarters and then outscored the Golden Aces 19-16 to post the 18-point win. 

The Wooden Shoes improved to 25-6 on the season and will take on Lawrenceville (28-2) Friday at 7pm for the sectional championship. Lawrenceville defeated Teutopolis back at the Capital Classic at the start of the season.

Brett Mette led Teutopolis with 15 points, while Mitch Hardiek scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Kyle Smith scored nine points, pulled down seven rebounds and had three steals. Michael Drees added eight points, six assists and two steals.

Effingham and Olney played one of their classic chess matches, with numerous lead changes and ties along the way.

The Hearts led 12-8 after one quarter, but Olney outscored Effingham 13-8 in the second quarter to lead 21-20 at halftime and then posted a 17-16 third quarter edge to go up 38-36 after three. Effingham, though, outscored Olney 29-17 in the fourth quarter, going 18 of 19 from the foul line in the process. The Hearts finished 21 of 24 from the line for the game, while Olney was 10 of 13 from the line.

Effingham was 19 of 41 from the field, 46%, including six of 15 on threes. Olney made 20 of 44 shots, 46%, including five of 15 on threes. Effingham had 10 turnovers, Olney had nine, but Effingham outrebounded Olney 24-18.

Hearts junior Brent Beals came off the bench to score 16 points, including 13 points in the fourth quarter on two threes, a two point bucket and five of five from the line. Grant Wolfe led Effingham with 18 points including nine of 10 from the line in the fourth quarter, and had four assists. Sean Zerrusen and Jacob Donaldson each scored eight points, Reed Schafer scored six, Brady Jackson had a rare four-point play, Jared Minor scored three points, and Michael Woltman scored two points and took a charge, as did Schafer.

Effingham will take on Champaign Central Friday night at 7 p.m.for the regional championship. Champaign Central beat Mattoon 77-49.

The Hearts squad posted its fourth straight season of 20 or more victories, the first time that's ever happened in Effingham basketball history for the boys squad.
