South Central, Cumberland Advance in Boys Regionals

ST. ELMO -- South Central High School continues its boys basketball season after edging Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 56-50 in opening round play of the Class 1A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional Monday evening.

The Hatchets held a 13-9 opening quarter lead on South Central and led 23-15 at halftime. WSS connected on eight free throws in the opening quarter.

South Central started its comeback with a slight 18-17 third period edge as Logan Lotz, a 5-foot-4 freshman, connected on three trifectas for nine points in the run while Brett Harmeier, a 6-foot-1 senior, hit a three-pointer and a basket for five.

Harmeier then nailed two more three-pointers and a regular basket for eight points while Drevonte Hill connected on a basket and was five of six from the free throw line for seven points in the final quarter 23-10 run. Trevor Markley also hit a three-point basket.

Lotz finished with 16 while Harmeier tallied 15 and Hill 11 in the victory.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Tristan Warner with 15 and Joshua Overbeck with 10. The Hatchets finish the season with a 13-13 record.

South Central improved to 13-15 and will now meet top-seeded Altamont at 6 p.m. Wednesday. In games tonight, Patoka faces Neoga at 6 p.m. followed by St. Elmo/Brownstown against Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick at 7:30.

Class 1A Nokomis Regional

Two games were on tap Monday evening in this regional.

Mulberry Grove, seeded 10th, upset eighth-seeded Bethany Okaw Valley 71-69.

In the second contest, Moweaqua Central A&M trounced Ramsey 111-59.

Mulberry Grove will now face Nokomis at 7 p.m. today. Central A&M advances to take on Effingham St. Anthony at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Class 1A North Clay (Louisville) Regional

Only one game was scheduled Monday evening. Grayville, seeded seventh, downed eighth-seeded Odin 63-51.

Tonight's games feature Edwards County (Albion) against North Clay (Louisville) at 6 followed by Sandoval taking on Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran at 7:30.

 

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

Hutsonville/Palestine downed Martinsville 70-36 in the opening game of the Dieterich Regional. Leading scorers were York with 23, Wright with 12 and Ogle with 10.

The second contest went to Oblong over Clay City 69-24. Oblong was led by four players in double figures, Maus with 19, Meese with 16, Jones with 12 and Laino with 11. Clay City was led by Fehrenbacher with seven.

Tonight's game features top-seeded Dieterich against 10th seeded Hutsonville/Palestine, 70-36.

Wednesday's game has Red Hill (Bridgeport) against Oblong at 7 p.m.

 

Class 2A Casey-Westfield Regional

Cumberland opened the Casey-Westfield Regional with a 72-48 win over host Casey-Westfield Monday evening.

The Warriors edged out to a 19-18 opening quarter lead on the strength of Payton Chism's 12 points as he nailed three trifectas. Cumberland kept close with 11 points from Tyson Magee.

The Warriors then held a 35-30 halftime lead. But the Pirates came back and had a big second half.

Cumberland pulled ahead 48-45 after the third period as Gunner McMeachan hit two three-pointners and had eight points in the quarter. The Pirates were eight of eight at the free throw line.

In the final period, Ryan Green went to work, scoring seven points while McMeachen chipped in with six and the Pirates pounded Casey-Westfield 24-3. Cumberland kept the Warriors from scoring a field goal as they were three of four at the free throw line.

Cumberland had four players hit double digits. McMeachan tallied 18 while Magee scored 16, Green 12 and Brandon Shaon 12.

The Pirates advance to face Lawrenceville at 6 p.m. tonight. The second game features Newton taking on Robinson at 7:30.

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Two games were contested at Teutopolis. Shelbyville claimed a 75-65 win over Vandalia in the opening contest. Shelbyville now advances to face Teutopolis at seven p.m. today.

The second game went to 10th-seeded Pana over fifth-seeded Sullivan 58-49. Pana advances to face third-seeded Marshall at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
