(UPDATE) Hearts Win Ninth Straight; Other Friday Scores

The Effingham Hearts won their ninth straight game Friday night, downing the Salem Wildcats 61-46 in Apollo Conference at Salem. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com 

Salem got the first basket of the game, but the Hearts scored the next 10 points. The Wildcats closed to within four, 14-10, at the end of the quarter. Effingham then went on a tear to start the second quarrter, but Salem again came back to within 16-10 for the quarter to trail the Hearts 30-20 at halftime. 

Salem then scored eight straight points to start the second half and pulled within 30-28 before the Hearts then outscored the Wildcats 13-2 for the rest of the period to lead 43-30 heading to the final period. The Hearts outscored Salem 18-16 in the fourth quarter to win by 15 points.

Effingham made 54% of its shots, 21 of 39, including five of 12 threes. Effingham was also 14 of 18 from the foul line, turned the ball over 13 times and collected 16 rebounds.

Salem hit 16 of 33 shots for 48% including two of six threes, and made 12 of 14 from the line. They also pulled down 18 rebounds, but their big bugaboo was turnovers; Salem turned the ball over 22 times in the contest.

Grant Wolfe had a big first half, scoring 20 of his 26 points before intermission, to lead Effingham in scoring. Jacob Donaldson, held to five points in the first half, scored 14 in the second half to finish with 19 for the game including a slam dunk. Also for Effingham: Sean Zerrusen 5, Brady Jackson 4, Reed Schafer 3, Jared Minor 2, and Michael Woltman 2.

Brenden Boles and Adam Bunnell each scored 16 points to lead Salem, now 4-21 on the season.

With the win, Effingham is 19-6 on the season and remain undefeated in the Apollo Conference with one game remaining next Friday night at Taylorville. The Hearts also play at Breese Mater Dei in non-conference action Tuesday night.

Effingham won the JV game 52-43. Brent Beals had a huge night for the Hearts' JV, scoring 30 points. Also for the JV Hearts: Landon Wolfe 9, Ryan Sandifer 6, Mason Hull 4, Jason Devore 3.
