Warrensburg-Latham Stays Unbeaten w/Narrow Win Over Teutopolis at Wooden Shoe Shootout; St. Anthony Downs Madison; Other Saturday Scores

The Warrensburg-Latham Cardinals remain undefeated at 25-0, but the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes dueled them until the end Saturday in the final game of the Wooden Shoe Shootout.

Warrensburg-Latham defeated the Wooden Shoes 45-40 in a game heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. In the other game broadcast from the Shootout, the St. Anthony Bulldogs defeated the Madison Trojans 67-51.

It was a battle between the Shoes and the Cardinals throughout the contest. The teams were tied 12-12 after one quarter, but a 14-7 second quarter spurt put Warrensburg-Latham ahead 26-19 at halftime. The Shoes pulled back to within 34-29 after three quarters. T-Town fell behind by eight with about 2:40 remaining, but got back within two before the Cardinals regrouped to win by five.

There wasn't much margin for error; the Shoes made just 16 shots in 38 tries for 42% and missed all eight of their threes. Teutopolis also made just eight of 14 free throws. The Shoes turned the ball over 13 times and grabbed 26 rebounds.

Warrensburg-Latham made 17 of 35 shots for 49% and missed all six of their threes. The Cardinals hit 11 of 15 foul shots, turned the ball over just 10 times, and won despite pulling down just 16 rebounds.

Garrett Shea led Warrensburg-Latham with 16 points, 12 in the first half, while Tyler Bond scored 15 points. Also for the Cardinals: Weston Nottlemann six, A.J. Duff four, Will Gustafson two and Austin Hardin two.

Brett Mette led Teutopolis with 13 points and Devin Smith scored 12 points. Also for the Shoes: Kyle Smith seven, Mitch Hardiek six and Chris Ungrund two.

Teutopolis falls to 21-6 on the season.

St. Anthony took control of their game fairly quickly, leading 17-6 after one quarter and up 31-19 at halftime. It was 47-35 Bulldogs after three quarters, and St. Anthony outscored Madison 20-16 in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs made 40% of their shots, 23 of 57 including seven of 19 threes. St. Anthony made 14 of 22 foul shots, turned the ball over just eight times and grabbed 34 rebounds. 

Madison made 22 of 50 shots for 44% including five of 17 threes. The Trojans made just two of eight foul shots, turned the ball over 14 times and pulled down 27 rebounds.

Nick Grunloh scored 22 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs. Drew Gibson scored 17 points and Chandler Martellli added 11 points. Also for the Bulldogs: James Kabbes four, Cade Walsh three, Alex Deters three, Alex Beesley three, Jay Niebrugge two, and Jack Nuxoll two.

Shamond Moore led Madison with 21 points.

In other action at the Shootout Saturday, Evansville Bosse held off a late comeback by Robinson to beat the Maroons 56-54, Mattoon defeated Marshall 62-49, and Danville downed Mt. Zion 61-54.

In other action Saturday:

The Effingham Hearts won their eighth straight game, downing the Pana Panthers 87-63. The Hearts led 17-14 after one quarter, extended the lead to 40-30 with a 23-point second quarter, and then outscored the Panthers 26-10 in the third quarter to pull ahead 66-40. Pana outscored Effingham 23-21 in the fourth quarter.

Grant Wolfe led Effingham with 24 points. Senior Brady Jackson got a start on Senior Night and made the most of it, scoring 15 points. Jared Minor followed up a 21-point performance Friday night with 14 points, and Jacob Donaldson was also in double figures with 11 points. Also for Effingham: Reed Schafer eight, Alex Webb five, Michael Woltman five, Brady Scott three and Sean Zerrusen two.

Effingham is now 18-6 on the season.

The Hearts JV squad posted a 66-45 win. Mason Hull led the way with 26 points, while Brent Beals added 15 points. Also for Effingham: Ryan Sandifer nine, Landon Wolfe nine, Ryan Huelsbusch two, Blake Lohman two, Bryce Lohman two, and Brett Koester one.

Effingham also won a freshman game 70-47. For the freshman Hearts: Hunter Rich 17, Lucas Hagler 13, Dylan Bushur 13, Cooper Jackson 12, Noah Allen five, Jason Bowlin four, Kendall Ballman three, Ty Morrissey two, and Tanner Gordon one.

 

At Riverton Shootout

St. Elmo/Brownstown fell to Riverton in the Riverton Shootout Saturday, 72-42.

Riverton stepped out to a 24-7 opening quarter lead. SEB played Riverton even over the next two quarters before a 19-9 final quarter run gave Riverton the 30-point win.

Landon Feezel led SEB with 19 points and that pushed him over the 1,000 point career mark. Lewis Brown added 12. Feezel pulled down 10 rebounds and had three steals. Klayton Kroll led in assists with four. SEB is now 12-13 on the season.
