Teutopolis Will Play for Championship in 8-3A State Tournament

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes have reached the championship game of the 8-3A State Tournament, edging Pleasant Plains 38-35 in quarterfinal action Saturday morning and then winning over Winfield Wheaton Christian 50-47 in semifinal action Saturday evening.

The Wooden Shoes will play for the state championship Thursday at 7:30pm against St. Joseph at Tolono Unity Junior High School. Teutopolis is 24-2, while St. Joseph is 22-4.

In the quarterfinal game, Teutopolis took an 11-5 first quarter lead, but Pleasant Plains crept back to within 16-14 at halftime and within 29-28 after three quarters. The Shoes posted a 9-7 fourth quarter edge to win by three.

Luke Ungrund led Teutopolis with 17 points and Mitch Hardiek scored 14 points. Mitch Hemmen scored five points and Brady McMahon added two points.

In the semifinal game, Teutopolis found themselves trailing 15-10 after one quarter but came back to tie the game 26-26 at halftime. Teutopolis led 39-35 after three quarters and then held on for the three-point win.

Mitch Hardiek and Mitch Hemmen were a one-two punch for Teutopolis, Hardiek scoring 22 points and Hemmen scoring 21 points. Brock Deters added four points and Luke Ungrund scored three points.
