Teutopolis Seventh Grade Boys Repeat as State Champs; Sigel St. Michael Loses Third Place Game

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes repeated as seventh grade boys basketball state champions Thursday night, defeating previously-undefeated Mossville 41-35 to capture the 7-3A title.

It's the third seventh grade state championship in four seasons for Teutopolis.

Meanwhile, Sigel St. Michael lost the third place game at the 7-1A state tournament to Pontiac St. Mary's 50-42.

The Shoes held a slim 5-4 lead after the first quarter, but extended the advantage to 19-11 at halftime and 31-23 after three quarters. Mossville outscored Teutopolis 12-10 in the fourth quarter to trim the final margin to five.

Evan Addis had a big night for Teutopolis with 17 points. Jordan Hardiek was also in double figures with 10 points. Also for Teutopolis: Matthew Deters 6, Hayden Ruholl 4, Evan Wermert 2, and Derek Deters 2.

Other team members are Ethan Weidner, Blake Mersman, Ethan Kremer, Cole Probst, Kolten Koester, Jack Poelker, Justin Hardiek, Andy Niebrugge and Brody Mette. The Wooden Shoes are coached by Doug Smith.

Teutopolis finished its championship season with a 24-2 record.

A Welcome Home Reception and Parade will be held for the seventh-grade boys basketball team, managers and cheerleaders Sunday, February 14.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

2:30 p.m. -- Fire truck ride and parade through Teutopolis

3 p.m. -- Return to Teutopolis Junior High School for a brief ceremony

3:30 p.m. -- Cake and punch reception.

Sigel St. Michael trailed just 14-13 after one quarter in their game, but were down 27-18 at halftime and 41-28 after three quarters before outscoring St. Mary's 14-9 in the fourth quarter to get within eight at the final buzzer.

Craig Croy scored 15 points and Justin Ruholl added 11 to lead the Sharpshooters. Also for St. Michael: Adam Fearday 5, Seth Hotze 3, Alex Cornell 2, Mitchel Althoff 2, Isaac Walk 2, and Max Niebrugge 2.

Sigel St. Michael finishes fourth in the state with a 22-4 record.
