St. Anthony, Teutopolis, Altamont Win Girls Regionals

Effingham St. Anthony, Teutopolis and Altamont all won girls regional basketball championship games Thursday night and each is headed to sectional semifinal action Monday night.

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

St. Anthony won the Dieterich Class 1A Regional, defeating Red Hill (Bridgeport) 52-38.

The Bulldogs held a 12-7 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 25-15 at halftime. St. Anthony continued its run with a 27-23 second half.

Abby Weis tallied 15 for the winners while Emma Richards and Hunter Niebrugge scored 10 points each. Richards pulled down 12 rebounds while Weis had four assists and three steals.

"It was great team defense tonight," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Hunter made Western work for all her points. Our free throw shooting was tremendous."

The Bulldogs connected on 22 of 27 free throws, 11 coming in the final quarter. Weis was a perfect 10 of 10 while Niebrugge connected on six of six.

Jamesha Western scored 19 for Red Hill.

St. Anthony advances to the Class 1A Nokomis Sectional Monday at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs will play either Okaw Valley or Chrisman, who play tonight for the Class 1A Hume Shiloh Regional championship. The game will be on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

Class 1A South Central Regional

Altamont claimed the championship of the South Central Regional by beating National Trail Conference opponent St. Elmo/Brownstown 59-30 Thursday evening.

The Indians trailed BSE 9-6 after the opening quarter. Morgan Brown connected on five points and Dana Shelton had two baskets for BSE. But the Indians came back tough in the second quarter with a 21-7 run to lead 27-16 at halftime. Leah Mayhaus knocked in three baskets.

Altamont kept its momentum throughout the entire second half with a 32-14 run.

Mayhaus tallied 14 points to lead Altamont while Carly McHugh chipped in with 12 and Keidron Duckwitz with 11.

BSE was led by Brown with 18.

Altamont advances to the Class 1A Nokomis Sectional and will take on Mowequa Central A&M at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Central A&M defeated Nokomis 53-27 to win the Class 1A Neoga Regional. The Altamont game can be heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

Class 2A Cumberland Regional

Teutopolis won the Cumberland Regional, downing Vandalia 46-34.

The Wooden Shoes trailed Vandalia 10-7 after the opening quarter and took a slight 18-16 halftime lead behind the scoring of Janie Sandschafer with seven points.

T-town held only a 29-27 lead going into the final quarter then had a 17-7 run. Shelby Thompson knocked down two three-pointers while Sandschafer added a three-pointer and three free throws.

Three players hit double digits for the Shoes. Thompson led the way with 16 while Sandschafer added 13 and Anna Hartke chipped in with 12.

Teutopolis advances to the Class 2A Pana Sectional. The Shoes will play Lawrenceville, who defeated Newton 50-45 for the Lawrenceville 2A Regional championship. Game time will be 7:30 p.m. The game will be aired on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.  Ahead of the Shoes at 6 p.m. Monday at Pana will be Flora vs. Tuscola.

Class 2A Lawrenceville Regional

Newton fell in its bid for a regional championship by dropping a 50-45 loss to Lawrenceville in the championship game of the Lawrenceville Regional.

The two squads were knotted at 14-14 after one quarter. Lawrenceville then took off with a 13-2 second period run. The Eagles outscored Lawrenceville 29-23 in the second half but that second period was the turning point.

Richards scored 15 for Newton while Cohorst had 12. The Eagles end the season with a 17-12 record.
