The Effingham Hearts got a huge lift off their bench in the fourth quarter to post a 58-48 win over the Olney Tigers in Tuesday night boys non-conference basketball action. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The game was tied 40-40 entering the final quarter when junior Brent Beals came off the bench and scored eight quick points to give Effingham a 51-43 lead and the Hearts were never headed. Senior Brady Jackson also hit a three-pointer and found three teammates for baskets and Effingham outscored Olney 18-8 in the period to post the win. Defense was also a key as Michael Woltman, Landon Wolfe and Mason Hull also came off the bench to play the first several minutes of the final period, giving most of the starters a breather before coming back to close out the win.

Grant Wolfe continued his season-long success, scoring a game-high 20 points despite being the subject of a box-and-one defense by the Tigers throughout the game. Jacob Donaldson finished with 13 points. Also for Effingham: Sean Zerrusen 7, Jared Minor 4, and Reed Schafer 3. Minor and Grant Wolfe each led the Hearts with six rebounds.

The first quarter was indicative of the first three quarters of the contest as Effingham led 16-13. Olney, though, closed to within 29-27 at halftime and forged the 40-40 tie after three. There were 13 lead changes and eight ties in the game.

Olney was helped by hitting eight three-pointers, although the Tigers made just one of five tries in the final quarter, while the Hearts hit three of four threes in the fourth quarter and finished with eight of their own for the game.

The Hearts shot 44% from the field, 17 of 39, including eight of 17 threes. Effingham had a killer night at the line, making 17 of 20 attempts. As impressive was four total turnovers in the game, and none until the second half. The Hearts grabbed 24 rebounds.

Olney made 18 of 40 from the field for 45% including 8 of 20 threes. The Tigers struggled at the line, making just four of 10. They only committed eight turnovers and pulled down 20 rebounds.

Hunter Wyatt led Olney with 19 points, but just three in the second half, as Zerrusen's defense took its toll.

The Hearts won their sixth straight game to improve to 16-6. Olney is now 12-11 on the season.

Effingham won the JV game 60-47. Beals led Effingham with 26 points, 19 in the first half. Hull scored 14 points and Landon Wolfe scored 10.
