Effingham County Special Olympics Wins Gold

The Effingham County Lightning Special Olympics basketball team captured their first gold medal in six years at the District H Tournament, held January 31 at Wesclin High School in Trenton.

Steve Ludwig and Manny Wei coach the team. Members of the team are Reagan Brown, Jay Borries, Emily Stead, Jessica Ludwig, Chase Wendte, Megan Mayes, Tom Frichtl, Logan Freeman, Angie Haarmann, Kraig Dahnke, Rachel Zakutansky, Caleb Scott and Dallas Tegeler. Sportsmanship ribbons were awarded to Jay Borries and Logan Freeman for portraying the best qualities of an athlete during a game.

Also, the Effingham County Lightning Skills team participated in the Area 9 Basketball Skills competition at Windsor High School on January 17. Karissa Bean earned a silver medal, Adam Gharst earned a gold medal, Abby Koester earned a gold medal and Macy Williamson earned a silver medal.

The gold medal winners have qualified for the Special Olympics State Games on March 11-13 in Bloomington/Normal.
