Big Second Half Carries Shoes Over Bulldogs; Other Friday Scores

A big second half keyed Teutopolis' win Friday night over the St. Anthony Bulldogs at the Enlow Center. The Wooden Shoes won 66-46 in a game heard on 979XFM. Along with game video below, we also recorded Sydney Horn's National Anthem performance, located here.

It was anybody's ballgame in the first half. Teutopolis took an early lead of 11 points, but St. Anthony had whittled it down to two at the end of the first quarter, 14-12. Teutopolis again got out of the gate well in the second quarter, but St. Anthony was again able to close the gap, this time to six at halftime, 23-17.

Then came the second half.

Teutopolis outscored the Bulldogs 20-13 in the third quarter and 23-16 in the fourth quarter to win the game by 20 points. The Shoes hit 14 of 23 shots in the second half to finish 24 of 47 for the game, or 51%. The Shoes made 12 of 17 from the foul line, turned the ball over 11 times, and grabbed 29 rebounds.

St. Anthony shot 39% from the field, making 17 of 44 shots including eight of 16 threes. The Bulldogs made four of just seven foul shots, committed 17 turnovers and pulled down 20 rebounds.

Mitch Hardiek led Teutopolis with 21 points, while Devin Smith scored 17 points and Brett Mette, plagued with foul troubles, finished with 11 points. Also for Teutopolis: Michael Drees 6, Kyle Smith 4, Brant Bueker 3, and Blake Mette and Chris Ungrund 2 each.

Drew Gibson led St. Anthony with 11 points while Kyle Hartke added 10 points. Also for St. Anthony: Cade Walsh 6, James Kabbes 5, Nick Grunloh 5, Jay Niebrugge 5, and Chandler Martelli 4.

Teutopolis improved to 20-5 on the season, while St. Anthony dropped to 14-10.

Teutopolis won the JV game 70-33. Brant Bueker scored 24 for the JV Shoes while Blake Mette scored 18 points. Alex Beesley led St. Anthony with 9, Alex Deters and Colin Koester each scored 6.

Friday night's game was the Pinkout game for the season in the battle against cancer. Proceeds were donated to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital's Women's Wellness Center, while 50/50 proceeds went to 12-year-old Teutopolis student Elizabeth Weidner who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
