St. A Captures NTC Title, EHS Drops Loss, Area Girls Roundup

BROWNSTOWN -- Effingham St. Anthony High School headed to Brownstown/St. Elmo for a National Trail Conference girls basketball contest Thursday evening and claimed a 64-34 victory. That wins gives the Bulldogs the NTC regular season championship with a perfect 7-0 record.

"Our starting guards had a great game and combined for 38 points," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Emily McDevitt's defense on Morgan Brown was tremendous. She had only two points."

The Bulldogs took a 12-2 opening quarter lead behind Abby Weis' seven points. The lead stood at 23-17 at halftime as Brownstown/St. Elmo came back with a 15-11 lead. Fitch and Moore tallied five each.

But the Bulldogs put together a 21-5 third quarter as Emily McDevitt went on a tear with eight points. The Bulldogs finished out with a 20-12 final quarter.

Weis and McDevitt led the Bulldogs with 13 points each while Abby Brown chipped in with 12.

BSE was led by Fitch with 15 points.

St. Anthony improves to 18-11 overall. The Bulldogs junior varsity squad won 40-30 to finish the season at 12-4.

At Salem

It was a different game altogether as Effingham fell to Salem 67-35 in Apollo Conference action Thursday evening.

The Hearts had beaten the Wildcats 55-52 in overtime earlier in the season. But this time around it was a different story.

Salem stepped out to a 19-6 opening quarter and never looked back, outscoring the Hearts  48-29 over the next three quarters.

"I really have no comment," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "It was hard to believe what I just witnessed."

Carsyn Fearday was the lone EHS player in double figures with 14. Aly Armstrong chipped in with nine.

The Hearts drop to 4-5 in the conference, 17-10 overall.

Neoga High School claimed a 68-46 win over Dieterich in National Trail Conference play.

EC Thies led the Indians with 24 points, breaking the school record for points in a career with 1,859 set by Molly Hartke in 2002.

Also in double figures was Jaycie Roy with 19. Neoga ends the season at 6-1 in the conference, good for second place, and is 21-7 overall.

Dieterich was led by Madison Bannick with 18 and Kallee Heuerman with 14. Heuerman pulled down 15 rebounds and had two steals. Kelsey Webb had three assists.

The Movin' Maroons drop to 1-5 in the conference, 8-19 overall. Dieterich will finish out NTC play Saturday at Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City with a 10 a.m. contest.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged North Clay (Louisville), 60-59 in non-conference action Thursday.

The Cardinals took a 13-9 opening quarter lead and led 30-27 at halftime. North Clay held a 40-36 lead going into the final quarter. WSS then rallied with a 24-19 final period to pull out the one point victory.

Grace Schuler led the winners with 18 points while Schleche and Tabbert chipped in with 10 points each. The Hatchets improve to 12-14 on the season.

North Clay was led by Jones with 20, Stanfield with 13 and Fender with 11.

Wayne City came calling in a non-conference matchup and handed South Central a 52-45 loss.

"We played much better tonight," said South Central Coach Gary Kapper. "Our defense had more intensity which enabled us to score some points on the break. We had some chances at the end to go ahead but just couldn't get the shot to fall. We struggled bad at the free thorw line with only nine of 21. That was the big difference in this game."

The Cougars were led by Keely Smith with 20 and Abby Hahn with 16. South Central ends regular season play at 8-17.

Newton's Richard connected on five three-pointers on the way to a game-leading 23 points. Hartrich chipped in with 15 while Frohning added 12.

The Eagles improve to 16-11 on the season.
