St. Anthony, Dieterich Wednesday Winners at NTC Tournament

The St. Anthony Bulldogs and the Dieterich Movin Maroons were the Wednesday winners at the 81st Annual National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament.

St. Anthony turned a big second half into a 73-46 win over Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick, while Dieterich pulled out to be a big early lead and defeated the Windsor/Stew-Stras Hatchets, 59-36.

ST. ANTHONY 73, BCCH 46

The first time these two teams played, St. Anthony won 76-33. This time, it looked like a different story in the first half. BCCH trailed just 19-15 after one quarter and 39-31 at halftime. The third quarter was the difference, though, as the Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 23-6 to pull ahead 62-37 and posted an 11-9 margin in the fourth quarter to win by 27 points.

St. Anthony shot 39% from the field, making 29 of 74 shots including nine of 23 threes. The Bulldogs struggled at the line, making just six of 18 attempts, but turned the ball over just eight times and grabbed 39 rebounds.

BCCH made 37% of its shots, 17 of 46, including two of nine threes. The Eagles also had a tough night at the line, making just 10 of 26. They also committed 19 turnovers and pulled down 31 rebounds.

Chandler Martelli led the Bulldogs with 19 points, while Nick Grunloh posted 14 points and 14 rebounds. Kyle Hartke was also in double figures with 10 points. Also for the Bulldogs: Drew Gibson 9, Cade Walsh 9, Jay Niebrugge 5, James Kabbes 3, Alex Deters 2, and Ty Kinkelaar 2.

Austin Rexroad and Konner Blackerby each scored 11 points to lead BCCH. Also for the Eagles: Aaron Nohren 9, Trey Buzzard 5, Kyle Black 4, Jake Wills 4, and Daniel Harder 2.

DIETERICH 59, WINDSOR/STEW-STRAS 36

The Movin Maroons got out of the gate early, leading the Hatchets 15-4 after one quarter and 34-12 at halftime. The Maroons had just a 25-24 second half edge, but the damage was done.

Dieterich shot 38% from the field, 20 of 53, including seven of 21 threes. The Maroons made just 10 of 21 foul shots, but turned the ball over just nine times and pulled down 28 rebounds. WSS made 14 of 40 shots for 35% including two of 14 threes, made just six of 11 foul shots, committed 22 turnovers and grabbed 27 rebounds.

Lance Niemerg led Dieterich with 21 points, while Nick Feldhake added 14 points. Also for Dieterich: Travis Niemerg 8, Noah Heuerman 6, Wyatt Abbott 3, Ryan Radloff 3, Callaway Campton 2, and Thad Howell 2.

Tristan Warner scored nine to lead WSS. Also for the Hatchets: Teddy Kessler 7, Joshua Overbeck 6, Isaac Kramer 5, Chase Thies 4, Nic Hutchinson 3, and Christian Kessler 2.

Wednesday's results means Friday's pairings are set. BCCH will take on Windsor/Stew-Stras at 6:15pm in the consolation bracket semifinals, followed by Dieterich and St. Anthony in a championship bracket semifinal contest.

Thursday, Neoga will play St. Elmo/Brownstown at 6:15pm in a consolation bracket semifinal game, followed by Altamont and South Central in a championship bracket semifinal contest.
