Shoes Down Braves, Pirates Claim Win

MOUNT ZION -- Teutopolis High School trailed Mount Zion after the opening quarter but took control and handed the Braves a 66-57 loss in non-conference boys basketball action Tuesday evening.

The Braves held a slight 18-17 first quarter lead. Mitch Hardiek then broke loose in the second period, knocking in two three-pointers and two other baskets for 10 points as T-town pushed ahead 34-27.

T-town had an 18-12 third period lead. The Braves came back with an 18-14 final quarter.

Hardiek led T-town with 19 points and five rebounds. Brett Mette chipped in with 13 points. Michael Drees had seven points and eight assists.

"We didn't play very well down the stretch as we allowed them to cut a 15-point lead to one before finishing the game on a 10-2 run," said T-town Coach Jason Hanson.

T-town improves to 17-5 on the season and will play host to Breese Mater Dei Friday.

At Martinsville

Cumberland edged Villa Grove/Heritage 68-62 in the Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Tournament Tuesday.

The Pirates took an 18-13 first quarter lead and led 37-30 at halftime. Villa Grove/Heritage pulled back within 53-52 going into the final quarter. Magee then nailed eight points and the Pirates had a 15-10 final quarter run.

Magee finished with 23 points to lead Cumberland while McMechan added 14 and Beard 10.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Lawrenceville handed Flora a 75-50 loss in the first game Tuesday in the Little Illini Conference Tournament.

Robinson then edged Marshall 62-58. Lawrenceville and Robinson will now meet for the tourney title at 8 p.m. Friday. Flora and Marshall square off in the third place contest at 6:30 Friday.

Tonight's games feature Olney vs. Paris at 6 followed by Newton taking on Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 7:30. The winners advance to the consolation championship game set for 5 p.m. Friday.
