Altamont, South Central Winners on First Night of NTC Tourney

The top-seeded Altamont Indians posted a 50-34 win over a determined Neoga Indians squad and the South Central Cougars downed the St. Elmo/Brownstown Eagles 50-44 in opening night action at the 81st Annual National Trail Conference Tournament at Altamont Tuesday. 

Tonight, the St. Anthony Bulldogs will take on the Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick Eagles at 6:15pm, followed by the Dieterich Movin Maroons and the Windsor/Stew-Stras Hatchets.

ALTAMONT 50, NEOGA 34

Altamont got out of the gate well in this contest, leading 12-3 after the first quarter, but Neoga played some good basketball and shot the ball well, outscoring Altamont 12-8 in the second quarter to pull within 20-15 at halftime. Neoga stayed close for much of the third quarter, but Altamont eventually outpointed them 17-11 in the period to lead 37-26 headed to the final quarter, and then outscored Neoga 13-8 in the period to post the 16-point win.

Altamont shot 51% from the field, hitting 21 of 41 shots including four of 12 threes. They made four of five foul shots, turned the ball over 14 times and pulled down 24 rebounds.

Neoga shot 32% from the field, making 13 of 41 attempts including four of 16 threes. They made all four of their foul shots, committed 18 turnovers and grabbed 23 rebounds.

Klaiton Wolff scored 20 points, 10 each half, to lead Altamont. Ryan Armstrong scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. Also for Altamont: Adam Mayhaus 8, Mitchell Stevenson 3, Sam Childerson 2 and Eric Wolff 2.

Caleb Hill and Trevor Easton each scored 8 points to lead Neoga. Also for Neoga: Jesse Holt 7, Caleb Abernathy 4, Clayton Butler 4, and Andy Freeman 3.

Altamont improved to 17-3 on the season while Neoga is still looking for its second win of the season.

SOUTH CENTRAL 50, ST. ELMO/BROWNSTOWN 44

Except for the first few minutes, South Central led the entire contest, but never was it a comfortable lead.

South Central was in frong 11-7 after one quarter, 25-20 at halftime, and 34-29 after three quarters. The Cougars then outscored the Eagles 16-15 in the fourth quarter to post the six-point win. Never did South Central lead by double digits.

South Central shot 43% from the field, making 16 of 37 tries including two of seven threes. The Cougars made 16 of 22 foul shots, committed just seven turnovers and grabbed 26 rebounds. 

SEB shot just 32% from the field, making 16 of 50 including three of 11 threes. The Eagles made just nine of 17 free throws, turned the ball over only six times and pulled down 29 rebounds.

South Central's Brett Harmeier led all scorers with 20 points on seven of nine shooting. Drevonte Hill scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Also for South Central: Jon Arnold 6, Ryan Matheny 5, and Trevor Markley 3 along with seven rebounds.

Landon Feezel led SEB with a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Hardimon scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Also for SEB: Klayton Kroll 7 along with 6 rebounds, Lewis Brown 4, Brock Oberlink 3, and Dylan Brooks 1.

South Central improved to 8-12 with the win, while SEB slipped to 8-10.

The four Tuesday teams will next play on Thursday; Neoga vs. SEB at 6:15pm in the consolation bracket, and Altamont vs. South Central to follow in the championship bracket.
