EHS Girls Drop to 2-1 in Own Tourney, St. A Advances to NTC Title, LIC, Highland Tourneys

Effingham High School picked up its second loss in a row at its own EHS Round Robin Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

The Hearts fell behind in the opening quarter 10-8 then scored only one basket in the second period to trail 19-10 at halftime.

EHS came back with a 10-9 third quarter but only played Vandalia even in the final period to suffer the eight point loss, 40-32.

Tinker led the Vandals with 16 points. Effingham was led by Carsyn Fearday with 12 and Marranda Steffen with eight.

EHS drops to 1-2 in the tournament. Leading the way is Pana and Centralia with 2-1 records followed by Greenville 2-2 and Vandalia 1-2.

The tournament concludes tonight as Vandalia faces Pana at 6 followed by Effingham taking on Centralia at 7:30.

National Trail Conference Tournament

Effingham St. Anthony advanced to the championship game of the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament with a 39-29 win over Brownstown/St. Elmo Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs took a 13-7 opening quarter lead and led 20-13 at halftime. St. Anthony then played Brownstown/St. Elmo even in the third period and had a 7-4 final quarter.

Abby Weis tallied 13 and Emma Richards 11 for the Bulldogs. BSE was led by Brown with 16.

In the opening game of the evening, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg handed Dieterich a 60-50 loss.

WSS held a 36-25 halftime lead. Dieterich came back with a 13-9 third quarter run to pull within 45-38 going into the final quarter but WSS regained control with a 15-12 run.

The Hatchets were led by Schlechte with 19 and Tabbert with 19. Dieterich was led by Heuerman with 16 and Vahling with 12.

The tournament finishes out play Saturday. Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City faces Dieterich at 2:30 p.m. for seventh place followed by South Central against Windsor/Stew-Stras for the consolation championship. Neoga takes on Brownstown/St. Elmo at 5:30 for third place and St. Anthony faces Altamont at 7 for the championship.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Olney claimed a 54-51 win over Newton for third place in the Little Illini Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday.

The Tigers took a 10-7 opening quarter lead but Newton came back with a 16-12 run to lead 23-22 at halftime. Olney then had a 14-11 third quarter and again, Newton came back to tie the score 48-48, sending the game into overtime.

The Tigers then had a 6-3 run to pull out the victory. Inyart tallied 16 for the winners while Luna added 13 and Nohren 10.

Newton was led by Hartrich with 14, Richards with 13 and Cohorst with 12. The Eagles are now 14-9 on the season.

In other games Thursday, Marshall edged Flora 47-45 for the championship. Paris downed Lawrenceville 36-31 to claim the consolation championship.

Highland Tournament

Three games were contested Thursday evening at the Highland Girls Tournament.

Belleville Althoff edged O'Fallon 48-43 while Highland won over Hillsboro 61-53 and Salem downed Belleville West 54-37.

The tournament comes to a close Saturday. Teutopolis will face Taylorville at 10 a.m. for the consolation championship followed by Belleville Althoff against Highland for fifth place at 11 a.m., Triad taking on Belleville West for third place at 1 p.m. and Salem squaring off against Breese Central at 2:30 p.m. for the championship.
