EHS Girls Suffer Loss at Own Tourney, T-town Claims Highland Tourney Win

Effingham High School fell to Pana 44-36 in its own girls basketball tournament Wednesday evening.

The Hearts fell behind 12-5 in the opening quarter and never could recover. The Panthers continued with a 13-7 second quarter to lead 25-12 at halftime.

The Hearts did get untracked in the third period with a 14-9 edge as Shelby Myers scored seven points. But EHS could only play Pana even in the final period.

Myers led the Hearts with 12 points but no other EHS player was in double figures. Pana was led by Dudra with 10.

In the opening game Wednesday, Centralia defeated Greenville 56-36.

Pana now leads the round robin tournament with a 2-0 record while Centralia is 2-1, EHS 1-1, Greenville 1-2 and Vandalia 0-2. The tournament continues tonight with Greenville facing Pana at 6 p.m. followed by Effingham against Vandalia at 7:30. The tournament comes to a close Friday evening.

Highland Tournament

Teutopolis trailed Breese Mater Dei 24-19 at halftime then came roaring out after halftime with a 14-7 run and went on for the 40-37 victory.

The two teams were tied at 12-12 after the opening quarter. Mater Dei then pushed ahead 24-19 at halftime.

Molly Smith didn't score an opening half basket and had only two free throws.  But Smith found the range in the third period with two regular baskets and a three-pointer for seven points while Janie Sandschafer hit a three-pointer, a two-pointer and two free throws, also for seven points.

The Shoes had a slight 7-6 final quarter edge.

Shelby Thompson finished with 13 points to lead the Shoes. She nailed three trifectas. Smith and Sandschafer had nine points each. Anna Hartke led in rebounds with six.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

In consolation bracket play Wednesday evening, Lawrenceville handed Casey-Westfield a 62-51 loss.

The other contest featured Paris against Red Hill (Bridgeport) but no score was reported.

Tonight's games feature the finals. Lawrenceville will face either Paris or Red Hill at 5 p.m. for the consolation championship. The third place game will have Newton taking on Olney at 6:30. Flora faces Marshall for the championship at 8 p.m.
