GREENVILLE -- Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony were both opening round winners in the 68th Annual James Burke Memorial Junior High Boys Basketball Tournament Monday.

St. Anthony edged Aviston 43-36. The Bullpups edged ahead 16-15 after the opening quarter but fell behind 22-21 at halftime. The Bullpups tied the score going into the final quarter 29-29 and had a 14-7 final period to pull out the victory.

Dust tallied 16 for the Bullpups while Hoene and Webb had eight each.

In the fourth game, Effingham handed Hillsboro a 40-27 defeat. The Mustangs held an 8-7 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 22-15 at halftime. Effingham then had an 18-12 second half run.

Utz tallied 11 points and pulled down six rebounds. Kalber led in steals with four.

In the other two games, Triad defeated Salem 59-23 and Greenville won over Roxana 51-18.

Tonight's games feature Salem against Aviston at 6 followed by Roxana taking on Hillsboro at 7, both in consolation bracket play.

Thursday's games will have St. Anthony taking on Triad at 6 followed by Effingham against Greenville at 7 in the winner bracket.

National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Tournament

Stewardson-Strasburg and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City picked up victories in the NTC Eighth-Grade Tournament in consolation bracket play Monday evening.

Stew-Stras won over Effingham Sacred Heart 32-19. Stew-Stras led 14-13 at halftime then had a 12-4 third quarter run.

Kirby tallied 23 for the winners. Sacred Heart was led by Wallace with eight.

Stew-Stras advances with an 8-11 record to face CHBC at 5:30 p.m. Thursday for the consolation championship.

CHBC edged Dieterich 37-36. No other information was provided on the game.

Tonight's games feature Sigel St. Michael against St. Elmo/Brownstown at 6:15 p.m. followed by Altamont taking on Neoga at 7:30 in winner bracket play.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis pounded Monticello in both seventh and eighth grade action Monday evening.

T-town won the seventh-grade contest 40-20. The Shoes took a 21-6 opening quarter lead. Hardiek scored 10 for the winners while Addis added nine and M. Deters eight.

In the eighth-grade game, T-town was a 50-17 winner over Monticello. The Shoes held a 30-9 halftime lead.

Hardiek scored 22 to lead the Shoes.

At Teutopolis

At Hutsonville

Newton St. Thomas claimed two wins over Hutsonville. In seventh-grade play, St. Thomas won 30-24. St. Thomas led 19-17 going into the final quarter then had an 11-7 run.

J. Zumbahlen scored 10 for the winners.

St. Thomas won the eighth-grade game 55-29. St. Thomas led 27-12 at halftime and had a 23-12 final quarter. Justin Zumbahlen scored 13 for the winners while Seth Weber had 11.

At Hutsonville
