Altamont Upsets Top-seeded Neoga in NTC, Girls Area Roundup

BEECHER CITY -- Altamont High School, seeded fourth in the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament, upset top-seeded Neoga, 46-30 in action Monday evening at Beecher City High School.

Altamont leaped out to a 13-3 opening quarter lead and led 28-17 at halftime. Altamont still had the momentum with a 9-4 third quarter and played even with Neoga in the final period.

Mayhaus tallied 13 points to lead the winners while Stone added eight.

Neoga was led by EC Thies with 10 points and Jaycie Roy with eight.

In the opening game in consolation bracket play, South Central downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City to advance to the consy championship, 46-34.

CHBC took a 13-12 opening quarter lead but the Cougars came back with a 14-6 second period run on the strength of Keely Smith's 11 points.  Smith knocked in four baskets, including a three-pointer, and was two of two at the line.

The two squads played even in the third quarter before South Central had a 10-5 final period.

Abby Hahn led the Cougars with 17 points, 12 coming in the second half. Smith added 16.

CHBC was led by Taylor Oldham with 11 and Tabitha Endsley with eight.

The tournament takes a couple of nights off before resuming Thursday with Dieterich against Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 6 p.m. in consolation play and St. Anthony taking on Brownstown/St. Elmo in winner bracket action.

Effingham Tournament

The 15th Annual Effingham Round Robin Tournament opened play Monday evening.

In the first game, Greenville edged Vandalia 45-40. The second contest went to Pana over Centralia 54-42.

Tonight's games feature Centralia against Vandalia at 6 p.m. followed by Effingham taking on Greenville at 7:15 p.m.

 

Highland Tournament

Teutopolis came back with a victory in second round play of the Highland Tournament Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes handily beat Okawville 64-39. The Shoes took a 16-8 opening quarter lead and led 32-24 at halftime. Molly Smith went on a tear in the third quarter. After scoring two baskets in the opening half, Smith nailed seven baskets for 14 points to push T-town into a 60-31 lead going into the final period.

Smith finished with 21 to lead the Shoes while Shelby Thompson added 14. Anna Hartke led the team in rebounds with seven. Danielle Repking led in steals with three.

In the opening game Monday, Breese Mater Dei defeated Carlyle 56-33.

T-town will now face Breese Mater Dei Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

In loser bracket action at the Little Illini Conference Tournament, two games were contested Monday evening.

Lawrenceville claimed a 49-42 win over Robinson and will now face Casey-Westfield at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Paris then defeated Edwards County (Albion), 60-33. The Tigers take on Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Tonight's games feature Flora against Olney at 6 p.m. while Newton will take on Marshall at 7:30 in winner bracket play.
