Shoes Suffer Loss at Highland Tourney, LIC Results

HIGHLAND -- Teutopolis High School suffered a first round loss in the Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes faced Belleville Althoff and dropped a close 44-41 decision. T-town held a 14-12 opening quarter lead as Molly Smith tallied seven points in the quarter and Shelby Thompson nailed two three-pointers.

 T-town held a 24-19 halftime lead. But Belleville Althoff came back in the second half with a 10-6 third quarter run to pull within a point. Then in the final quarter, Althoff connected on 11 of 15 free throws for a 15-11 run and the victory.

Thompson finished with 15 points while Smith added 11. Anna Hartke had eight rebounds.

In other games Saturday, Triad defeated Carlyle 78-30, O'Fallon beat Breese Mater Dei 58-37, Breese Central downed Okawville 62-35, Highland won over Nokomis 67-50, Belleville West beat Taylorville 58-40, Hillsboro defeated Nashville 41-28 and Salem bounced Wesclin 63-37.

The tournament continues tonight as Carlyle Meets Breese Mater Dei at 4 p.m., T-town takes on Okawville at 5:30, Triad faces O'Fallon at 7 and Highland meet Breese Central at 8:30.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

In action at Olney High School, four games were contested in the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday.

Flora claimed a 64-42 win over Red Hill (Bridgeport) in the opener. Olney then downed Lawrenceville 50-28. Marshall won 66-35 over Casey-Westfield.

In the final game of the day, Newton beat Paris 50-45. The Eagles edged out to a 14-12 opening quarter but Paris came back with an 11-5 second period run to lead 23-19 at halftime.

The third quarter belonged to the Eagles with a 19-10 count and the two teams played even in the final period.

Richards scored 17 for Newton while Frohning chipped in with 11 and Hartrich added 10. The Eagles improve to 14-7 and will now face Marshall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
