Mattoon Beats EHS, Area Girls Basketball Roundup

Mattoon High School came calling at Effingham and claimed a 56-38 Apollo Conference girls basketball win over the homestanding Hearts Thursday evening.
Mattoon edged out to a 14-13 opening quarter lead as Jackson nailed four baskets for eight points and Thompson had five points. The Hearts were led by Carsyn Fearday with two three-pointers. Aly Armstrong also contributed a three-pointer.
But the Green Wave extended their lead to 29-25 at halftime as Jackson continued her hot scoring with a three-pointer and two other baskets for seven points.
Mattoon kept the momentum in the third quarter and pushed farther away from the Hearts with a 15-5 run and finished out the final quarter for the 56-38 win.
Jackson finished with 22 points while Thompson added 17 for the winners. Effingham was led by Shelby Myers with 11 points and Fearday with 10.

At Brownstown
Altamont claimed a National Trail Conference victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo Thursday evening, 60-51.
The Indians held a 16-15 first quarter lead as Tinley Mette knocked in three baskets and two free throws for eight points. The lead went to 32-28 at halftime as Mette continued her hot-shooting with three baskets. Katie Grimsly and Carly McHugh added a three-pointer each.
Altamont's three-point shooting guided the Indians to a 17-13 third quarter run for a 49-41 lead going into the final quarter. Keidron Duckwitz connected for two trifectas and McHugh added another one.
Mette finished with 18 points to lead the Indians while Duckwitz added 15. The Indians had five three-pointers in the contest.
BSE was led by Brown with 17 points and three steals. Bone added 12 points and nine rebounds while Fitch had 10 points and three steals. Moore had three steals. BSE had five three-pointers, four by Brown.

At Strasburg
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged South Central 45-41. WSS stepped out to a 15-4 opening quarter lead on the Cougars.Schlechte tallied seven points for the Hatchets.
But South Central came back with a 16-12 second period to pull within 27-20 at halftime. The Cougars continued their momentum with a 10-6 third period and stood within three points going into the final quarter.
Schlechte then came back with eight points in the final quarter as the Hatchets had a 12-11 edge and pulled out the win.
Schlechte finished with 19 points for the winners while Tabbert added nine.
South Central was led by Abby Hahn with 15 points, nine coming in the final quarter, and Alannah Sigrist with 12. The Cougars drop to 1-4 in the National Trail Conference, 7-11 overall.

Oblong jumped out to a 16-2 lead on Dieterich and never looked back in a 57-25 non-conference win Thursday evening.
Oblong led 38-12 at halftime and 48-16 going into the final quarter. Cheyenne Wells led the winners with 14 points while Taylor Smith added 13.
Dieterich was led by Kalee Heuerman with 11 points and seven rebounds. Kelsey Webb had four assists while Kaitlyn Bloemer had two steals.
The Movin' Maronos drop to 6-14 on the season.
Oblong won the junior varsity contest 33-22.

In opening round play of the Little Illini Conference Tournament, two games were contested Thursday evening.
In the opener Red Hill (Bridgeport) downed Robinson 59-50. The second game went to Casey-Westfield over Edwards County (Albion), 50-45.
The tournament continues Saturday with four games on tap.
