Hearts Down Taylorville in Apollo Action; Other Friday Night Scores

The Effingham Hearts used a 50-point second half to defeat the Taylorville Tornadoes 72-62 in Apollo Conference basketball action Friday night at EHS Gym. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com  

Both teams were sluggish offensively in the first half, with Taylorville leading 11-9 after one quarter and the Hearts in front 22-20 at halftime. 

Effingham exploded out of the gate in the third quarter, posting 26 points. Taylorville started hitting some threes to stay in the game, trailing the Hearts 48-37 after three quarters. 

The fourth quarter was wild, with Taylorville hitting five threes and making eight of nine from the line and outscoring the Hearts 25-24 in the period, but Effingham won by 10.

The Hearts hit 51% from the field, making 25 of 49 shots including 10 of 21 on threes. Effingham hit 12 of 15 foul shots, 11 of 12 in the second half. The Hearts turned the ball over 11 times and pulled down 20 rebounds.

Taylorville made 18 of 37 shots for 49%, including nine of 20 threes. The Tornadoes hit 16 of 23 foul shots, grabbed 26 rebounds, but committed a whopping 20 turnovers.

Effingham's Grant Wolfe led all scorers with 31 points, hitting eight of 14 shots from the field and making 11 of 12 from the line. He also had seven assists. The Hearts' Jacob Donaldson also had a big night, scoring 24 points, 18 in the second half. He made 10 of 15 shots. Also for the Hearts: Brady Jackson scored eight points, all in the second half, Sean Zerrusen scored seven points, all in the second half, and Brent Beals, back after a long injury layoff, hit a bucket.

Blake Heimsness led Taylorville in scoring with 15 points. Lane Ruppert and Logan Clayton each added 11 points.

The Hearts improved to 9-4 with the win, while Taylorville slipped to 8-7.

Effingham won the JV game, 61-48. Mason Hull led the JV Hearts with 21 points, while Landon Wolfe scored 18 points.
