Newton Wins Dieterich Girls Meet, Shoes Fourth at Edwardsville

DIETERICH -- Newton High School captured the championship of the Dieterich Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

The Eagles defeated Brownstown/St. Elmo 52-24. Newton stepped out to a 13-5 opening quarter and led 24-7 at halftime. Newton had a 20-7 third period run.

Richards tallied 15 for Newton while Frohning scored 13.

BSE was led by Moore with eight.

In the third place contest, Casey-Westfield downed North Clay (Louisville) 61-25. The Warriors held a 30-17 halftime lead then had a 24-4 run in the third period.

Cox tallied 15 for the winners while Cutright added 10. North Clay was led by Fender with 10.

The fifth place game went to Arcola over South Central 52-50 in overtime. The Cougars held a 19-16 halftime lead and led 35-33 going into the final quarter. The Purple Riders came back to tie the game, sending it into the overtime period where they had a 6-4 count for the victory.

South Central was led by Hahn with 22 points and Smith with 14.

The seventh place contest went double overtime before Dieterich took a 61-58 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City as sisters Donetta Ohnesorge and Carolyn Wendte coached opposite teams.

CHBC had a two point lead at halftime and into the final quarter. But Dieterich came back with a 14-12 run to tie the score. Both teams tallied 10 in the first overtime session. The Maroons then had a 10-7 second overtime run to pull out the victory.

Coach Ohnesorge's squad was led by four players in double figures. Bannick tallied 14 while Web scored 12, Heuerman 11 and Shadle 10.

Coach Wendte's team was led by Smith with 17 and Morrison with 13.

Edwardsville Tiger Holiday Classic

Teutopolis finished fourth in the Edwardsville Tourney Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes beat DeKalb in the first game of the day. DeKalb held an 8-5 first period lead before the Shoes edged ahead 14-13 at halftime. Thompson and Smith both tallied five points in the third quarter 16-12 run. The Shoes finished out with an 11-5 surge at the end, hitting seven free throws.

Hartke scored 11 and Smith 10 for the Shoes.

In the third place contest, Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin outlasted Teutopolis 61-56. Griffin took a 17-9 opening quarter lead but T-town came back to pull within 29-25 at halftime. The Shoes played Griffin even in the third period but Griffin had a 19-18 fourth period edge.

Thompson led the Shoes with 16 points while Smith added 12.
