EHS, T-town Claim Two Boys Tourney Victories

Effingham and Teutopolis both picked up two victories in the Effingham/Teutopolis Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament Monday.

The Wooden Shoes opened with a 54-38 win over Mattoon. T-town held a 25-15 halftime lead then had a 16-8 third period run.

Austin Johnson tallied nine for the winners while Devin Smith and Brett Mette had eight points each.

In the second contest, Effingham downed Jerseyville 46-39. The Hearts trailed 24-20 at halftime then went on a tear, outscoring Jerseyville 12-5 in the third quarter and 14-10 in the final period to pull out the win.

Grant Wolfe connected on 16 points as the lone Heart player in double figures.

Teutopolis then defeated Oak Lawn 76-47. The Wooden Shoes trailed 19-12 after the opening quarter but swung that momentum around to outscore Oak Lawn 50-14 over the next two quarters.

Kyle Smith tallied 20 for the Shoes while Brett Mette added 16 and Mitch Hardiek chipped in with 10.

The Hearts then defeated Chicago Brooks 70-39. EHS took a 14-6 opening quarter lead and boosted that to 35-12 at halftime.

Jacob Donaldson led the Hearts with 21 points while G. Wolfe contributed 20 points and Sean Zerrusen 11 for the Hearts.

In other games, Chicago Marshall beat Charleston 70-59, Mattoon won over Oak Lawn 58-42, Chicago Brooks downed Jerseyville 63-37, Lincolnway West handed Charleston a 72-58 loss and Lincolnway West beat Chicago Marshall 59-48.

T-town will meet Lincolnway West at noon today while the Hearts take on Lincolnway West at 3:30. EHS and T-town then square off at 8 p.m.
