VANDALIA --Effingham St. Anthony picked up an opening round victory in the 44th Annual Vandalia Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Bulldogs defeated Shelbyville 57-48. St. Anthony held a 28-23 halftime lead then had a 16-12 final quarter.

Three players hit double figures for the Bulldogs. Kyle Hartke, a 6-foot senior, led the way with 14 points while Nick Grunloh and Drew Gibson scored 11 each.

In the opening game of the day, Flora defeated St. Elmo/Brownstown 57-50 in overtime. The Wolves held a 9-6 opening quarter lead but SEB came back with a 13-3 run to lead 19-12 at halftime. Flora again took control with a 13-8 run but SEB led 27-25 going into the final period. Flora came back to tie the score, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Wolves had an 8-6 run to pull out the two-point win. Gocey led Flora with 24 points while Leib added 10.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Feezel with 17 and Hardimon with 10.

Vandalia then edged Shelbyville 52-50.

In the third game, Altamont defeated Patoka 76-72. The Indians jumped out to a 42-32 halftime lead. Patoka came back with a 24-16 third quarter run but Altamont steadied and had an 18-16 final quarter.

Four players hit double figures for Altamont. Hosick tallied 22 while K. Wolff and Armstrong added 16 each and Mayhaus scored 11.

Pana downed Greenville 61-46 in the fourth game.

In the sixth game, Flora defeated South Central 57-42. The Wolves held a 22-10 halftime lead and outscored South Central 16-13 in the third quarter.

Leib scored 15 for the winners while Smith added 10. South Central was led by Harmeier with 23 and Hill with 11.

The final game of the day went to Altamont over host Vandalia 69-51. Vandalia took a 15-10 opening quarter lead but Altamont blasted ahead with a 23-8 second period run. The Indians continued their blitz with a 23-17 third quarter run.

Armstrong scored 18 while Hosick had 14, Mayhaus 13 and Cornett 10 for the winners. Cornett pulled down seven rebounds.

The tournament continues today with two sessions.
