NEWTON -- Host Newton High School claimed a 46-38 non-conference girls basketball win over Effingham St. Anthony Thursday evening.
The Eagles edged out to a 12-10 opening quarter lead as Richards tallied five points. The Bulldogs stayed close on two three-pointers, one by Abby Weis and one by Madison Schuette.
Newton continued edging the Bulldogs by pushing into a 20-15 halftime lead as Frohning scored two baskets and had eight points at halftime.
The Eagles had a 14-12 edge in the third quarter as Richards went on a tear with eight points and led 34-27 going into the final quarter where they finished out with a 12-11 run.
"We played well for about 24 of 32 minutes," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Then we had mental lapses. We have to break those long stretches of no scoring."
Newton finished with two players in double digits. Richards tallied 16 while Frohning added 13. The Eagles improve to 7-5 on the season.
The Bulldogs were led by Weis with nine points.

At Paris
Teutopolis had big scoring quarters in the second and third periods to claim a 55-45 win over Paris.
Paris took a 9-7 opening quarter lead before T-town got untracked for a 16-11 second period run. Drees tallied nine points in the quarter including one three-pointer. The Shoes held a 23-20 halftime lead.
T-town pushed that to 41-27 going into the final quarter with an 18-7 run. Once again Drees was on with seven points while Hartke added six and Thompson five.
In the final quarter, Paris had an 18-14 run but couldn't overcome those two high scoring quarters for the Shoes. T-town did not hit a field goal in the final quarter but was hot from the free throw line with 14 of 15. They ended with 24 of 29 for the contest.
T-town finished with three in double figures, Drees with 21, Thompson with 13 and Hartke with 11. Hartke pulled down eight rebounds while Thompson had seven.

Altamont trounced Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 62-19 in National Trail Conference play Thursday evening.
The Indians held CHBC scoreless while taking a 29-0 opening quarter lead. Keidron Duckwitz was unstoppable with five baskets and two free throws for 12 first quarter points.
Altamont led 52-6 going into the final quarter. Duckwitz tallied 16 points while Shelbi Stone chipped in with 11.
CHBC was led by Tabitha Endsley with seven points.
