Effingham St. Anthony High School edged Newton 58-55 in boys basketball competition Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs held a 14-9 first quarter lead as Kyle Hartke knocked in two three-pointers and another basket for eight points. The lead went to 32-17 at halftime as Nick Grunloh took over with eight points.

St. Anthony then had a 12-11 third quarter edge. Newton came back with a 16-14 final period run but couldn't make up that first half deficit.

The Bulldogs were led by Grunloh with 13 and Hartke with 12. Chandler Martelli added nine points.

Newton was led by Mammoser with 15 points and Koebele with eight.

At Sandoval

Dieterich had a big second quarter in downing Sandoval 65-58 in a non-conference contest.

The Blackhawks edged out to a 13-11 opening quarter lead but Dieterich came roaring back with a 21-9 second period and never looked back in the win.

Four players hit double digits for the Movin' Maroons. T. Niemerg tallied 17 while Poe and N. Feldhake added 15 each and L. Niemerg had 13. The Maroons knocked down eight three-pointers.

Sandoval was led by Anderson and Williams with 20 each and Downes with 10.

Central A&M stepped out to a 25-7 opening quarter lead and never looked back. Reed tallied 16 for the winners.

WSS was led by Overbeck with 17 as the Hatchets drop to 2-4 on the season.

Casey-Westfield picked up its first victory of the season by downing Neoga 61-42 in a non-conference contest.

The Warriors trailed Neoga 14-13 after the opening quarter and 33-27 at halftime. C-W then had a 22-4 third quarter run and never looked back.

Payton Chism led the winners with 28 points and Corey Carver added 18. Neoga was led by Trevor Easton with 13 and Drew Ramert with 10.

Neoga drops to 0-8 while Casey-Westfield is now 1-4.
