MOUNT ZION -- Effingham High School edged Mount Zion 40-35 in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Monday evening.

The score was tied at 7-7 after the opening quarter. The Hearts then put together an 8-3 second period run to lead 15-10 at halftime. EHS continued its momentum in the third quarter, outscoring the Braves 14-7 to lead 29-17 going into the final quarter.

The Hearts then had to hold off the Braves who came back with an 18-11 final quarter surge.

"We did a really nice job defensively tonight," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "That was really our focus. We held them to 17 points through the first three quarters and made them hit some very tough shots. We made enough plays in the second half to extend our lead. We just really need to continue to be more consistent throughout the game. We did limit our turnovers, only having nine.

"Our team defense was excellent and Marranda Steffen and Miranda Fox did a nice job on Ali Davis and help defense was excellent. Our offense will continue to improve as we keep playing more together."

Aly Armstrong led the Hearts with 14 points while Carsyn Fearday had nine.

EHS improves to 5-3 overall while Mount Zion is 3-8.
