St. Anthony Beats CHBC, Area Girls Basketball Roundup

COWDEN -- Effingham St. Anthony claimed a 59-29 girls National Trail Conference basketball win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Thursday evening.
The Bulldogs took an 11-7 opening quarter lead as six players scored. The lead went to 25-11 at halftime as Emma Richards tallied four points and Abby Brown and Madison Schuette knocked in a three-pointer each.
In the second half, St. Anthony had a 16-8 third period run and outscored CHBC 18-9 in the final quarter.
Three players hit double digits for the Bulldogs. Brown tallied 11 while Abbie Schmidt and Richards scored 10 each. Schuette had four assists while Richards had seven boards. Emily McDevitt had five assists and four steals.
CHBC was led by Felicia Johnson with 14.
"We shot the ball really well and knocked down some jumpers tonight," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "The greatest positive was only seven turnovers."

At Okaw Valley
Altamont had a big scoring opening half and held on for a 45-36 non-conference win over Okaw Valley.
The Indians stepped out to a 13-4 opening quarter lead and led 28-18 at halftime. Altamont had a slight 17-16 second half edge.
Brooke Burns scored 15 points for the Indians, 11 coming in the opening half run.

Tetuopolis took a 10 point lead at halftime then held Nokomis to only one point in the final quarter for a 58-33 victory.
The Shoes led 14-10 after the opening quarter as Smith knocked in two baskets, including a three-pointer, and two free throws for seven. Drees and Thompson had a three-pointer each.
T-town then had a 13-7 second period run as Thompson connected on two trifectas.
Drees finished with 18 points to lead the Shoes with seven field goals, including two trifectas, and two of three at the line. Thompson chipped in with 14 points, hitting four three-pointers and Smith added 10 points.

Brownstown/St. Elmo took a 28-14 first half lead then had an 18-8 run against South Central for a 59-37 National Trail Conference win.
Brown scored 24 for the winners and Moore added 12.
South Central was led by Hahn with 19.
"The girls worked hard tonight but we just could not get into a flow offensively," said South Central Coach Gary Kapper. "BSE is a good team that plays hard and their press created problems for us. We will just forget about this game and move forward, continuing to improve."
The Cougars drop to 1-2 in the conference, 4-4 overall.

Dieterich improved to 4-8 on the season with a 50-34 non-conference victory over North Clay (Louisville) Thursday.
The Maroons held a 24-17 halftime lead then had a 20-11 third quarter surge. Anna Shadle tallied 15 and Kallee Heuerman 14 for the winners. Heuerman pulled down 11 rebounds. Shadle and Kelsey Webb had three assists each. Shadle had four steals.
North Clay was led by Mikayla Stanfield with 15 points.
