Effingham downed Mattoon twice in junior high boys basketball competition Thursday evening on the Mustangs homecourt.
In seventh-grade play, Mattoon took a 23-21 halftime lead but the Mustangs came roaring back with a 14-2 third period count and went on for a 52-37 victory.
Ballazhi tallied 16 and N. Thompson 10 for the winners who improve to 8-4 on the season.
In eighth-grade action, Effingham was a 38-26 winner. The Mustangs trailed Mattoon 6-5 after the first quarter and 15-13 at halftime. Effingham then had a 17-5 third quarter run and never looked back.
Pemberton totaled 14 points for the winners. Utz had seven assists while Pemberton had nine rebounds and Cramsey seven boards. The Mustangs are now 4-8 on the season. Mattoon drops to 8-4.

At Sigel
St. Elmo/Brownstown captured the consolation championship of the National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Tournament Thursday evening.
SEB edged Stewardson-Strasburg 29-25. Stew-Stras held an 18-6 halftime lead but SEB had an 18-3 third quarter run and outscored Stew-Stras 5-4 in the final period.
Rosborough scored 11 and Stine eight for the winners. Vonderheide led Stew-Stras with nine as the Stars dropped to 3-10.
In the third place contest, Neoga handed Altamont a 29-19 loss. Sigel St. Michael claimed the championship over Dieterich, but no score was listed.

At Louisville
North Clay (Louisville) and Cisne split wins in junior high boys action Thursday evening. Cisne edged North Clay 28-27 in the seventh-grade contest.
North Clay took a 9-6 opening quarter lead and led 11-8 at halftime. North Clay still held a lead 24-18 going into the final quarter. Cisne rallied with a 10-3 final period surge to pull out the victory. North Clay was led by Ethan Bible with 16 points. Tate and Fetherling had 10 points each for Cisne.
In the eighth-grade contest, North Clay led 20-12 at halftime then had a 20-12 third quarter run and tallied a 54-38 win over Cisne.
Luke Fleener led the winners with 20 poinrts while Colby Zimdars chipped in with 12. Farleigh led Cisne with 16.

At Olney
Jasper County fell to Olney in both seventh and eighth-grade action Thursday evening.
Olney won the seventh-grade contest 32-26, stepping out to a 17-7 opening quarter lead. Ben Meinhart and Evan Schafer had eight points each for Jasper County.
In the eighth-grade contest, Olney won 45-28. Jarret Tharp scored 13 points for Jasper County.
