Altamont, T-town Finish Third At Seventh-Grade Girls State Tourneys

Altamont and Teutopolis both captured third place finishes in girls seventh-grade state tournaments Thursday evening.

Class 7-2A State Tournament

Altamont claimed the third place honors with a 25-18 victory over Bloomington Corpus Christi. Altamont ends the season with a 25-3 record while the Saints bow out at 20-8.

The game was tied at halftime, 7-7, and the Wildcats only led 16-14 heading into the final stanza then had a 9-4 run to put the game in the win category.

Abby Goeckner led all scorers with 11 points and came up big in the fourth quarter with seven points.

In the championship game, Lewistown Central beat Bushnell Prairie City 41-31.

Class 7-A State Tournament

Teutopolis edged Stanford Olympia to claim third place in the Class 3A State Tourney at Auburn High School Thursday.

Scoring began quickly as both the Spartans of Olympia and the Wooden Shoes traded early baskets to tie the score 2-2. Teutopolis jumped to a 7-2 lead but Olympia answered back to bring the score to 7-4 with 1:26 remaining in the first quarter. T-town's Carly Michels was fouled as time expired and made one of two free throws to push the score to 9-6.

Olympia came back to tie the score at 9-9 and take a two-point lead with 4:13 remaining in the first half. Olympia held a 13-9 lead before Teutopolis came back on a Kylie Hoelscher jumper with just over a minute left in the half. The Shoes led 19-14 at halftime.

T-town led 23-16 going into the final quarter and quickly scored two points. The Spartans pulled back within three points with 1:15 remaining but the Shoes extended their lead on Michels free throws.

T-town ends the season at 18-9 while the Spartans end at 13-12. Michels finished with 16 points for the Shoes.

In the championship game, Springfield St. Agnes beat Gillespie 51-24.
