T-town Boys Finish Second at Capital Classic

BRIDGEPORT -- Teutopolis High School claimed second place at the Capital Classic Basketball Tournament Saturday evening, falling to Lawrenceville in the title contest 77-74.

The Wooden Shoes had beaten Red Hill (Bridgeport) in the morning session 78-27. That gave the Shoes a 3-0 record in pool play and advanced them to the title contest.

In the Red Hill contest, T-town stepped out to a 27-4 opening quarter lead and led 48-11 at halftime and it was over early. The Shoes were led by Brett Mette with 16 points while Devin Smith added 14 and Blake Mette 12.

In the title game, T-town got in foul trouble with four of the five starters with two fouls each, sitting the entire second quarter. T-town's bench responded and pushed the Shoes into a 34-32 halftime lead. The Shoes held a two point lead after the third quarter, 53-51.

But Lawrenceville put together a 26-21 final quarter run, mostly on the two three-pointers by Winningham and 14 free throws.

Hardiek tallied 21 for the winners, connecting on three trifectas. Brett Mette had 12 points.

The Shoes placed three players on the All-Star Team, Brett Mette, Michael Drees and Devin Smith.
