EHS, Newton Open Bob Kerans Girls Tourney With Victories

NEWTON -- Effingham High School had a big second quarter in beating Altamont 53-23 in opening round play of the Bob Kerans Newton Girls Basketball Tournament Monday evening.
The Hearts edged out to a 12-5 opening quarter lead then went on a tear with a 23-7 pounding for a 35-12 halftime lead. Carsyn Fearday knocked in six field goals and was two of two at the line for 16 points. Bria Barr chipped in with nine points.
Altamont was led by Mette with eight points.
In the second contest, Newton pounded Cumberland 61-24. The Eagles held Cumberland scoreless while taking a 22-0 first quarter lead. Cumberland had a 13-10 second period run but Newton came back in the third quarter, outscoring the Pirates 22-4.
Hartrich tallied 18 and Cohorst 14 for the winners. Cumberland was led by Marti with seven points.

At Dieterich
Dieterich picked up a victory over Sandoval in non-conference action Monday evening, 49-31.
The Maroons edged out to an 11-7 opening quarter lead and went on an 18-2 second period run to lead 29-9 at halftime. Anna Shadle tallied 18 points for the Maroons, hitting nine two-pointers. Kallee Heuerman pulled down 12 rebounds while Kelsey Webb had nine. Webb and Heuerman led in assists with three each. Shadle had three steals.
Sandoval was led by Christonia Saddler with 20 points.
Dieterich improves to 1-2 on the season.

Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran edged North Clay (Louisville) 42-40 in action Monday evening.
The Cardinals took an 11-6 opening quarter lead but CORL came back with a 20-6 second period run to lead 26-17 at halftime. North Clay pulled within 35-29 going into the final quarter and had an 11-7 run but fell short.
Cole led the winners with nine points. CORL was led by Jones with 13.
