Bulldogs Begin Season w/Loss in OT

The St. Anthony Bulldogs battled cold shooting to take Clifton Central into overtime in their season opener Monday night, but lost 41-38 in the opening game of the St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com  

St. Anthony hit just 33% from the field, but stayed in the game throughout. Clifton Central shot the ball alright, but the Comets were plagued by 25 turnovers.

St. Anthony led 9-8 after one quarter, but trailed Clifton Central 20-19 at halftime and 29-25 after three quarters. The Bulldogs held Clifton Central to three points to the fourth quarter and managed to send the game to an extra period, tied 32-32 at the end of regulation. Clifton Central then outscored the Bulldogs, 9-6 in OT to post the win. The Comets made five of six foul shots in the extra period to seal the win.

St. Anthony made just 17 of 52 shots, and missed all 10 of its three-point attempts. The Bulldogs only made four of nine foul shots. St. Anthony committed just eight turnovers, but were outrebounded 30-21.

James Kabbes was the lone bright spot offensively for St. Anthony, scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Also for St. Anthony: Nick Grunloh 6, Kyle Hartke 6, Alex Beesley 4, and Chandler Martelli, Drew Gibson, Adam Levitt and Cade Walsh 2 apiece.

Blake Willis led Clifton Central with 11 points including four from the line in the overtime, while Zach Washington scored 10 points.

St. Anthony has Tuesday off, then will take on Champaign St. Thomas More on Wednesday night.

In the second game, Mount Zion defeated Robinson 75-61. Kuhle led the Braves with 20 points while Smith had 19 and Ewing 14. Robinson was led by Dirks with 27, Sandschafer with 15 and Bopp with 11.
