Effingham St. Anthony High School opened the girls basketball season by downing Dieterich 49-23 Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 15-6 opening quarter lead on Abby Brown's big scoring frame. Brown banged home two trifectas and finished with 10 points in the quarter. The Bulldogs held a 24-10 halftime lead.

Then it was Abbie Schmidt's turn in the third quarter for the Bulldogs as she connected on four field goals for eight points and the Bulldogs led 38-16 going into the final quarter.

Schmidt and Brown were the one-two scoring punch for the Bulldogs with 14 and 12 points respectively. Schmidt led in rebounds with niNE while Meg Richards pulled down seven. Abby Weis had three steals and Emily McDevitt three assists.

"It was a great start to the season by hitting some open shots by Abby Brown," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "That really sparked our offense in the first half. Abbie Schmidt then dominated the paint in the second half."

Leading Dieterich was Anna Shadle with seven points. Kallee Heuerman led in rebounds with nine. Kelsey Webb had two assists and two steals. Anna Shadle also had two assists.

At Pana

Effingham fell behind early by a 16-8 first quarter count against Pana and trailed 23-18 at halftime. The Hearts then rallied with a 27-16 second half run and pulled out a 45-39 win.

Carsyn Fearday, a freshman, scored 16 points. She connected on eight of nine from the free throw line to push the Hearts to the victory.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis' Molly Smith stepped out big time in the opening quarter and nailed four baskets and four free throws as the Shoes took a 24-9 lead. Smith scored 13 of her total 23 points in that opening quarter barrage.

The Shoes held a 26-14 halftime lead. T-town's S. Thompson scored 16 and A. Hartke 11. Hartke led in rebounds with seven and steals with five while Sandschafer pulled down six boards.

Newton was led by Ariel Richards with eight points.

At Altamont

Altamont played host to Vandalia and the Indians dropped a 54-37 decision to the Vandals.

The Indians had one bad quarter. Altamont trailed 12-11 after one period but the Vandals went on a 20-4 tear in the second quarter to lead 32-15 at halftime. The Indians played Vandalia even in the second half.

Hosick tallied 14, Bright 13 and Tinker 11 for the winners. Altamont was led by Taylor Paquette and Leah Mayhaus with nine each.

Brownstown/St. Elmo opened the season with a 60-42 loss to Mount Olive Tuesday evening.

Mount Olive stepped out to a 17-7 opening quarter lead and led 37-14 at halftime. Murphy taliled 17 while Henke added 15 for the winners.

BSE was led by Kyrstyn Fitch with 16 points, five rebounds and two steals and Morgan Brown with 11 points. Emily Bone pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Trojans led 49-4 at halftime. B. Sherwood scored 21, Rennels 12, Crowder 11 and H. Griffin 11 for the winners.

Cumberland was led by K. Ault with four points.
