Moweaqua Central A&M, Kankakee McNamara Claim State Titles

NORMAL -- Moweaqua Central A&M captured the Class 1A State Girls Basketball Tournament championship Saturday with a 51-41 win over Hardin Calhoun.

The score was knotted at 17-17 after the opening quarter and Hardin Calhoun took a 27-25 halftime lead. Moweaqua then came back with a 26-14 second half run.

Taylor Jordan scored 21 for the winners while Kaley Hennings added 14. Ryan Dooley had nine rebounds. Central A&M finished at 33-1.

Hardin Calhoun was led by Emma Baalman with 16 and Kassidy Klocke with 11. Calhoun ended the season at 32-3.

The third place game went to Prophetstown over Gilman Iroquois West 45-28.

In the Class 2A State championship, Kankakee McNamara won over Breese Central 55-51.

As in the Class 1A state title game, the losing team took a 13-9 opening quarter lead and led 23-18 at halftime. Kankakee McNamara then came back with a 37-28 second half run to pull out the victory.

McNamara had three players hit double digits, Khadaizha Sanders with 19, Hanna Mitchell with 12 and Kelly Rudin with 10. Mitchell led in rebounds with seven. McNamara finished at 29-4.

Breese Central was led by Kendra Wilkin with 23, Grace Yaunches with 14 and Alicia Book with 10. Wilken led in rebounds with 14. The squad ends at 31-4.

Winning the Queen of the Hill competitions were Shayne Smith in Class 1A. The Hume Shiloh Tri-County Co-op player hit 11 followed by Mikah Maple (Moweaqua Central A&M) 7, Haley Hoekstra (Flanagan Cornell) 7 and Arieal Scott (Danville Schlarman) 5.

In Class 2A, Lexi Steele of Carlyle won with nine followed by Lexi Devries (Byron) 8, Zania Myers (Monticello) 6 and Lizbeth Delgato (Chicago Cristo Ray Jesuit) 4.
