The Casey-Westfield Warriors picked the right time of the season to play their best basketball.

The Warriors defeated the previously-unbeaten Dieterich Movin Maroons Friday night, 53-48, to win the Oblong 1A Regional and defeat the state's #1 rated Class 1A team in the process. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.

Casey-Westfield's win came two days after they defeated the second-seeded team in the regional, St. Anthony, by 24 points after losing to the Bulldogs by 34 points one week ago.

Meanwhile, the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes needed double overtime to defeat the Marshall Lions, 54-51, to win the Marshall Class 2A Regional, the Altamont Indians saw their season end with a 57-55 overtime loss to Nokomis for the championship of the Stew-Stras Class 1A Regional.

And, the Effingham Hearts made Senior Night special with a 59-50 win over the Taylorville Tornadoes to claim a share of the Apollo Conference championship and capture their 20th win of the season in the process.

CASEY-WESTFIELD 53, DIETERICH 48

Despite turnover and foul troubles in the first half, the Warriors remained close to the Maroons, trailing just 20-16 at halftime, took a 30-26 third quarter lead and never let go of that lead the rest of the way.

Alex Bohnhoff gave the Maroons a 5-0 opening quarter lead, knocking in a three-pointer and a regular basket. The senior finished with nine of Dieterich's 11 opening quarter points. Casey-Westfield coughed up the ball seven times in the opening quarter and seven more for 14 at halftime. Dieterich had half those turnovers with seven.

But the Maroons were struggling from the field. With Casey-Westfield's defense, Dieterich could muster only four of 11 field goals in the opening quarter and six of 20 at halftime. The Warriors, meanwhile, were staying close despite the turnover and foul problems by knocking in 50 percent of their shots.

Dieterich pushed ahead 22-16 at the start of the third quarter and still led by five with just under four minutes remaining in the period. But here came Casey-Westfield as Corey Carver hit a basket, Cody Hollensbe a shot and Darious Fisher a three-pointer to tie the score at 26-26. A basket by Trey Thompson gave Casey-Westfield the lead with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter and that was the last time Dieterich would see the lead.

Dieterich pulled within three points several times in the final quarter but could never overcome the hump. And Casey-Westfield sank free throw after free throw with 11 of 17.

"We struggled and they came out and punished us a couple of times," said Dieterich Coach Jeff Staser. "They battled hard and we battled hard and it is what it is."

Three Casey-Westfield players hit double figures as Carver led the way with a double-double, 18 points and 10 rebounds. Hollensbe and Fisher chipped in with 13 points each. The Warriors finished with 57.5 percent from the field and 61.9 percent at the line.

Dieterich was led by Bohnhoff with 29 points. Lance Niemerg led in rebounds with five.

"The kids have done everything I've asked them to do this season," said Coach Staser. "It hurts but you just go on and hold your head high. I'm going to miss the six seniors. I took them on as freshmen and it's going to be tough for me. They put in a lot of hard work."

The Maroons, top-seeded in the regional and finishing No. 1 in the final state poll, ended the season with a 29-1 record, the best record ever at Dieterich High School.

Casey-Westfield moves on to the Effingham St. Anthony Sectional with a 17-12 mark. The Wariors will face Patoka at 7 p.m. Wednesday. In the opening game Tuesday, Nokomis will take on Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 7 p.m. The championship is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.

TEUTOPOLIS 54, MARSHALL 51 (2OT)

The Wooden Shoes posted the regional championship victory despite abysmal shooting in the first half.

T-Town trailed 9-5 after the first quarter and had the game tied 14-14 at halftime. A hard-fought third quarter left Marshall up 26-25, but the Shoes fought back to send the game to overtime tied 39-39. Each team scored five points in the first extra period to leave the game tied 44-44 heading for the second overtime. The Shoes scored 10 points in the second extra period to seven for Marshall to give Teutopolis the win.

Devin Smith led a balanced Teutopolis attack with a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Michael Drees scored 10 points. Mitch Hardiek scored nine points, Jordan Thoele scored seven, and Brett Mette had six points with 10 rebounds. Brock Mette scored five points, while Austin Johnson and Tyler Gebben each scored three points.

The Wooden Shoes improved to 24-4 on the season, and advanced to the Benton 2A Sectional, where they will play the Lawrenceville Indians at 7:00 Wednesday night in a game to be aired on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com. Lawrenceville defeated Robinson, 63-60, Friday night to win the Lawrenceville 2A Regional.

NOKOMIS 57, ALTAMONT 55 (OT)

Nokomis won the game despite a heroic 37-point performance by Altamont sophomore Ryan Armstrong. Even more remarkable is that Armstrong had just six points at halftime.

Altamont held a 12-8 lead after one quarter on two three-pointers by Adam Mayhaus and two buckets by Armstrong. Nokomis outscored Altamont 9-5 in the second period to tie the game 17-17 at halftime with Mayhaus scoring three points and Armstrong two.

The Indians outscored the Redskins 16-10 in the third period to take a 33-27 lead with Armstrong hitting four three-pointers in the period and Brandon Runge and Evan Cornett each scoring a bucket. However, Nokomis outscored Altamont 19-13 in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 46-46 at the end of regulation. Armstrong scored 12 of Altamont's 13 points in the fourth quarter including a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, with Mayhaus hitting a foul shot for the other point.

Nokomis then outscored Altamont 11-9 in the extra period to post the two-point regional championship win, with Armstrong scoring seven of Altamont's nine points in the overtime. Thomas Caravello got a bucket for the other two points.

Besides Armstrong's 37 points, Mayhaus scored 10 points, Caravello four, and Runge and Cornett two points apiece.

Reid Detmers scored 20 points to lead Nokomis. The Redskins will take on Red Hill Tuesday at 7pm at the St. Anthony 1A Sectional.

EFFINGHAM 59, TAYLORVILLE 50

The Hearts and Tornadoes tangled throughout the game, just as they did in early January when Effingham posted a 64-58 win at Taylorville.

Effingham played well early and led the game 15-11 after the first quarter with the Hearts getting points from six different players. Taylorville edged the Hearts 12-11 in the second period to pull within 26-23 at halftime and outpointed Effingham 15-12 in the third period to go to the final quarter tied at 38-38.

Then came the fourth quarter. Taylorville fell behind by eight before rallying to within one, but that's when the Hearts' guard combination of Grant Wolfe and Braydon Bone took command. Wolfe was remarkable, scoring, stealing the ball and setting up others to score. He ended up scoring 10 points in the period. Meanwhile, Bone scored seven points of his own, going five-of-six from the line and got a sensational blocked shot on a layup attempt.

Bone and Wolfe finished with 20 points apiece, while Michael Carie scored 10 points including four in the fourth quarter. Jacob Donaldson scored five points, Sean Zerrusen two, and Jared Minor and Frankie Kasdorf one point apiece.

The Hearts hit 54% of their shots, 22 of 41, and made 13 of 16 foul shots while turning the ball over just seven times. Effingham grabbed 18 rebounds and made two of six three-point attempts.

Taylorville shot 50% from the field, 20 of 40, including seven of 14 from three-point range, but made just one of six foul shots and turned the ball over 13 times while also claiming 18 rebounds.

Effingham ends the regular season with a 20-7 record, while Taylorville ends the regular campaign at 19-10. The Hearts will play Mt. Vernon Tuesday at 7:30pm in first-round action at the Effingham 3A Regional. Mt. Vernon just beat Effingham 71-50 this past Tuesday night at EHS.

Effingham won the JV game, 51-38, to finish their season under Ryan Wohltman with a 13-4 record. Brent Beals with 17 points and Brady Jackson with 11 points paced the JV Hearts.
