St. Anthony Posts Convincing Win to Open Regional; Hearts Bow to Mt. Vernon; Other Tuesday Scores

The St. Anthony Bulldogs posted a convincing 79-29 win over the Martinsville Blue Streaks in first round 1A Regional action Tuesday night at Oblong. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  

Meanwhile, the Mt. Vernon Rams played an excellent game in defeating the Effingham Hearts 71-50 in non-conference regular season action at EHS. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

St. Anthony led 17-8 after one quarter and were still up by eight into the second period when Bulldogs Coach Cody Rincker called a time out and had a chat with his players. From that point, the Bulldogs kicked it into a higher gear.

St. Anthony outscored Martinsville 19-7 in the second quarter, 23-8 in the third quarter, and 20-6 in the final period to post the 50-point win.

The Bulldogs shot 57% from the field, making 35 of 62 shots, added six of 11 from the line, turned the ball over 12 times, pulled down 30 rebounds and made three of 10 three-point shots.

Martinsville made nine of 33 shots, hit on seven of 13 from the line, committed 33 turnovers, and grabbed 23 rebounds while making four of six three-point tries.

Twelve of the 14 players dressed for St. Anthony scored, led by Jeff Niebrugge with 15 points and Derek Rios with 12 points. Zach Gardewine, Nick Grunloh and Kyle Bourgeois each scored eight points, Andrew Gardewine and Connor Greene had seven points each, Kyle Hartke six, and James Kabbes, Chandler Martelli, Adam Levitt and Alex Beesley two points each.

Bryan Hinkle led Martinsville with 13 points.

St. Anthony improved to 19-10 with the victory and advanced to action Wednesday at 7:30pm against Casey-Westfield, who defeated Neoga in the second game Tuesday night at Oblong. St. Anthony just defeated Casey-Westfield last Friday night on Senior Night at the Enlow Center.

The Hearts did a lot right Tuesday night, including shooting 49% from the field, but it wasn't enough on a night when Mt. Vernon hit 63% of its shots.

Mt. Vernon took a 19-11 first quarter lead, hitting nine of 14 shots. The Rams led 38-23 at halftime, finishing the half at 70% from the field on two-pointers and 60% on three-point tries. The Rams hit 12 of 18 shots in the second half to finish 29 of 46 overall, including seven of 12 on three-point attempts.

The Hearts finished 20 of 41 from the field, five of 13 on three-point tries. Effingham made five of six foul shots, Mt. Vernon six of nine. The Hearts committed 14 turnovers, the Rams just seven. The Hearts had just 13 rebounds, only three in the first half, while Mt. Vernon grabbed 21 boards.

Michael Carie scored 11 points to lead Effingham, while Sean Zerrusen and Grant Wolfe each scored 10 points, Jacob Donaldson had nine points, and Brayden Bone scored eight points. Jared Minor also had a basket for his two points.

Braden Fitzjerrells led Mt. Vernon with 21 points, but four Rams finished in double figures, including Shauntez Taylor with 18, and Gilwan Nelson and Luke Wilson with 10 each. Dylan Reeves scored nine points and Bryce Hunter hit a three-pointer.

Effigham is now 19-7, while Mt. Vernon improved to 21-6. Three of the Hearts losses have come to Mt. Vernon, and they play again next Tuesday night in the Effingham 3A Regional. The Hearts close the regular season with Senior Night activities, playing host to the Taylorville Tornadoes. If the Hearts, they will claim their 20th win of the season and claim at least a share of the Apollo Conference championship.
