Beecher City, Cowden-Herrick Pick Up Opening Round Boys Regional Wins

STRASBURG -- Beecher City and Cowden-Herrick were opening round winners in the Class 1A Stewardson-Strasburg Boys Basketball Regional Monday evening.

Beecher City opened the evening with a 57-46 victory over host Stewardson-Strasburg. The Eagles edged out to a 14-9 opening quarter lead and led 32-23 at halftime. Daniel Harder led the winners with 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Also in double figures was Rexroad with 11 points.

Stew-Stras was led by Jones with 19 points and Overbeck with 12. The Comets not only saw their season come to a close but also their existence. Stew-Stras will co-op with Windsor next season and the two schools are combining to become the WSS Hatchets.

Beecher City advances with an 8-19 record and will face top-seeded Altamont at 6 p.m. today.

In the second game Monday evening, Cowden-Herrick claimed a 55-45 win over Ramsey. Ramsey held a 14-13 opening quarter lead but the Hornets came back with a 16-4 run to lead 29-18 at halftime and never looked back.

Pasley led the winners with 12 points. He was the lone Hornets player in double figures. Ramsey was led by Black with 14 points.

Cowden-Herrick now faces Nokomis at 7:30 p.m. today.

Class 1A Odin Regional

St. Elmo/Brownstown saw its season come to a close in opening round play at the Odin Regional.

Mulberry Grove handed the Eagles a 53-47 loss. Mulberry Grove held a 7-2 opening quarter lead but SEB came back with a 23-14 run to lead 25-21 at halftime. Mulberry Grove then had a 15-8 third quarter run to take a 36-33 lead going into the final quarter. SEB had a 10-7 run to knot the score, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Mulberry Grove went on a 10-4 tear to pull out the victory.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Maxey and Feezel with 18 points each. Feezel pulled down 15 rebounds.

Mulberry Grove advances to face Odin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Pana ended Cumberland's season with a 64-51 victory in opening round play of the Marshall Regional Monday.

Cumberland held a 14-12 opening quarter lead but Pana came back with a 23-12 second period run and had a 19-12 final period surge.

Napier and Shaon led Cumberland with 10 points each.

Pana advances to face Teutopolis tonight at 7.

Host Oblong picked up a victory over Palestine/Hutsonville 53-46 in its own 1A regional Monday evening.

Oblong now advances to face top-seeded Dieterich Wednesday at 6 p.m. Tonight's games feature St. Anthony against Martinsville at 6 p.m. followed by Neoga taking on Casey-Westfield at 7:30.
