St. Anthony, T-town Fall At Eighth-Grade State Tournaments

DOWNS -- Effingham St. Anthony fell victim to Madison 43-35 in the Class 8-2A Boys State Basketball Tournament Saturday at Downs Tri-Valley High School.

Madison edged out to a 14-12 opening quarter lead and still held that two-point lead at half, 22-20. Madison then outscored the Bullpups 9-6 in the third quarter and finished out with a 12-9 final period run.

Only one player hit double figures for St. Anthony, Ben Strullmyer tallied 10 points. St. Anthony finishes the season at 21-5.

In other games, Springfield Blessed Sacrament edged Elmwood 28-26, Champaign St. Mathew won over Mazon-Verona-Kinsman 34-23 and Streator Woodland downed Delavan 50-31. In the semifinals, Madison beat Springfield Blessed Sacrament 47-34 and Champaign St. Matthew won over Streator Woodland 36-25.

In the championship game Thursday, Madison (20-0) will take on Champaign St. Matthew (17-10) at 7:30 p.m. The third place game at 6 p.m. will feature Springfield Blessed Sacrament (18-7) against Streator Woodland (25-2).

At Tolono

Gibson City GCMS held a 17-10 halftime lead over Teutopolis. Gibson City GCMS then took a 14-10 third period and had a 19-10 final quarter for a 50-34 victory over the Wooden Shoes.

Both teams had opening quarter jitters but settled down in the second quarter. The teams traded scoring drives in the third quarter but GCMS put together a couple of stops on defense late in the quarter and converted steals into points. Nathan Garard drained a long three to put GCMS up 31-22. He finished with 15 points while teammate Ryland Holt had 13.

T-town was led by Dawson Smith with 19 points. He was the lone player in double figures for the Shoes. T-town ended the season at 16-10.

In other games, Calumet Park won over Farmington Central 47-35, Hillsboro edged Warrensburg-Latham 45-41 and Washington downed Quincy Blessed Sacrament 61-38. In semifinal action, Hillsboro defeated Calumet Park 51-47 and Washington won over Gibson City GCMS 28-22.

The championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday with Hillsboro (22-5) taking on Washington (25-1). The third place game features Calumet Park against Gibson City GCMS (25-1) at 6 p.m.
