EHS Claims Hillsboro Freshman Tournament Crown

HILLSBORO -- Effingham High School claimed the Hillsboro Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament title by edging host Hillsboro, 73-72 in overtime Thursday evening.

The Hiltoppers stepped out to an 18-9 opening quarter lead but the Hearts rallied as Lucas Vasquez went crazy in the second quarter, scoring 12 points while Jason Devore chipped in with eight and the Hearts led 35-34 at halftime.

Devore continued his hot scoring with two three-pointers and two free throws and Ryan Sandifer scored seven as the Hearts moved ahead 54-46. Hillsboro came back with a 22-14 final period run to knot the score at 68-68, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime session, Sandifer hit a three-pointer and Mason Hull a basket. Hillsboro didn't connect on a field goal but hit four free throws only to fall short.

Sandifer led EHS with 21 points while Hull added 17, Devore 17 and Vasquez 14.
