St. Anthony is headed to the Class 8-2A State Tournament Saturday.

BROWNSTOWN -- Effingham St. Anthony rushed out to a 22-11 first half lead and went on for a 43-21 victory over Nokomis to win the Class 8-2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Boys Basketball Sectional Wednesday evening.

The Bullpups led 9-6 after the first quarter then kicked things into high gear with a 13-5 run. Colin Koester scored five in the second period while Alex Brandenburger and Bryson Wall had four each.

St. Anthony continued its momentum with an 11-3 third period surge. Wall added on to his scoring with five more points while Ben Strullmyer chipped in with four.

Wall was the lone player in the game to finish in double figures with 11. Strullmyer added nine, Brandenburger had eight and Koester seven in even scoring for the Bullpups.

St. Anthony now advances to the Class 8-2A State Tournament at Downs Tri-Valley High School Saturday for a 10 a.m. contest against Madison. The Bullpups are 21-4 while Madison is unbeaten at 18-0. If the Bullpups win, they will play again at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Teutopolis advances to the Class 8-3A State Tournament.

Class 8-3A Marshall Sectional

Teutopolis had to go overtime but gave Coach Kent Niebrugge his 300th career victory by edging Red Hill (Bridgeport) 49-45 to win the Marshall Sectional.

The Wooden Shoes edged ahead 13-12 after the opening quarter but Red Hill had a run to lead 26-21 at halftime. T-town pulled back within three points going into the final quarter then outscored Red Hill 10-7 to knot the score at 41-41, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, T-town had an 8-4 run. Tyler Runde scored 15 to lead the Shoes while Josh Hardiek added 12.

T-town advances with a 16-9 record to face Gibson City (24-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Class 8-3A State Tournament at Tolono Unity Junior High School. If the Shoes win, they will play a 6:30 p.m. contest the same day.

There will be a welcome home reception for the seventh-grade boys basketball team, managers and cheerleaders Sunday. There will be a fire truck ride and parade through Teutopolis at 1:30 p.m. followed by a brief ceremony at 2 and a cake and punch reception at 2:30.

Class 8-1A Palestine Sectional

Sigel St. Michael saw its season come to a close in the Palestine Sectional Wednesday evening.

Mulberry Grove edged St. Michael 34-32. Mulberry Grove advances to the state tournament with a 17-4 record.

 

Effingham's Landon Wolfe

Class 8-4A Mahomet-Seymour Sectional

Effingham Junior High School fell to Champaign Franklin in the championship game of the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional Wednesday.

Franklin claimed the win 49-37 and heads to the state tournament with a 24-2 record. Effingham took a 10-5 opening quarter lead but Champaign Franklin came back with a 20-5 second period run and led 25-15 at halftime. The Mustangs outscored Franklin again in the third period 14-7 but Franklin came back in the final quarter 17-8.

Landon Wolfe tallied 18 points for Effingham, had two steals and pulled down five rebounds. He scored his 500th point as an eighth-grader, breaking the Effingham Junior High School scoring record. Rich had five rebounds. The Mustangs end the season with a 20-3 record.
