A 17-8 fourth quarter advantage gave the Effingham Hearts a hard-fought 47-39 win over the Olney Tigers Tuesday night in boys basketball action. The game at Olney was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

Effingham didn't take their first lead until the second half, trailing the Tigers 14-10 after the first quarter and 21-18 at halftime. The Hearts were held to 30% shooting in the first half.

Things changed as the second half began. Effingham scored the first four points of the third quarter to take their first lead at 22-21. It was a see-saw period from that point with Olney back on top 32-31 at the end of the quarter. The Hearts mounted a big offense in the final period, though, assisted by seven points from Jacob Donaldson, back from a foot injury that sidelined him since before Christmas.

The Hearts stayed afloat in the first half, however, thanks to Braydon Bone, who scored 12 of Effingham's 18 points in the half.

Bone finished with 15 points to lead the Hearts. Donaldson scored nine points, Michael Carie eight, and Grant Wolfe seven, all in the second half. Michael Woltman scored four points, and Jared Minor and Reed Schafer with two points apiece. Derek Deimel with 11 points and Gage Miller with 10 points paced Olney.

Effingham and Olney both shot 45% from the  field, but Olney was hot in the first half, while Effingham hit 12 of 19 shots in the second half. Neither team shot well from the line, Olney four of nine, and Effingham seven of 15.  The Hearts had a remarkable two turnovers, one each half, grabbed 19 rebounds and made just two of nine three-point shots. Olney turned the ball over 10 times, pulled down 23 rebounds, and made two of nine three-point tries.

Effingham improved to 16-6 on the season and head to Mt.Zion Friday night in Apollo Conference action. The Hearts will be looking to avenge a rare conference home loss.

Effingham won the JV game 52-29, after it was a four-point game at halftime. For Effingham: Jacob Donaldson 11, Brent Beals 10, Trevor Kreke nine, and Brady Jackson and Mason Hull seven each.
