CHARLESTON -- Effingham finished fourth in the Apollo Conference Freshman/Sophomore Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday at Charleston High School.
Charleston won the tournament by downing Taylorvillle 64-57 in the championship game. In the third place contest, Salem won over Effingham 61-34, Mattoon claimed fifth place by beating Mount Zion 62-36.
At Hillsboro
Effingham competed in the Hillsboro Freshman Tournament and defeated Vandalia 60-40.
The Hearts had a 23-6 second period surge to lead 40-21 at halftime and outscored Vandalia 22-19 in the second half for the win.
Mason Hull scored 22 for Effingham while Ryan Sandifer added 14. The Hearts will be back in action in the tournament Wednesday against Auburn, a winner over Pana, at 7:15 p.m.
