Teutopolis Advances To Class 7-3A State Tourney Title Game

Teutopolis advanced to the championship game of the Class 7-3A State Boys Basketball Tournament after picking up two victories Saturday at Wenona Fieldcrest.

The Shoes won the opener over Farmington Central, 45-39. The Farmers took a 16-9 opening quarter lead as they dominated the boards and caused several turnovers by T-town, converting them into points. But, T-town came back with a 16-4 run to lead 25-20 at halftime.

Then it was the Farmers turn again, taking a 12-6 third period run to lead 32-31 going into the final quarter. Once again it reverted back to the Shoes. Luke Ungrund's three-pointer tied the game at 36-36. The Shoes took the lead with three minutes to play and didn't relinguish it. T-town went five of six from the free throw line in the final period after not connecting on a free throw in the game.

Two players hit 13 points each for the Shoes, Mitch Hardiek and Ungrund.

In the second game, Markham Robert Frost took the early lead but the Shoes came right back and ended up winning 41-33.

Markham held a five point lead after the opening quarter and led 22-18 at halftime. But T-town surged back in the second half, outscoring the Warriors 23-11. Markham Robert Frost tied the game at 31-31 with four minutes to play.

Coming out of the time out, Hemmen retook the lead on a jumper and Ungrund drained a three to increase the lead to six for T-town. Marsean Triplett grabbed a rebouind and connected on a three-pointer to cut the lead to three but once again Ungrund nailed another three and the Shoes went back up by six with 1:20 to play.

Ungrund finished with 15 for the winners while Hemmen tacked on 12 points.

In other games, Farmington Central edged Germantown Hills 35-34, Gillespie won over Hoopeston Area 39-26 and St. Joseph downed Rushville Schuyler Industry 42-30 in opening round play. In semifinals, Gillespie edged St. Joseph 33-31.

T-town (23-3) will now face Gillespie (25-2) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the state championship. The third place game will feature Farmington Central (22-3) against St. Joseph (22-3) at 6 p.m.

Class 7-1A StateTournament

Newton St. Thomas saw its season come to a close in the Class 7-1A State Tournament in opening round play Saturday at St. Joseph Middle School.

Joliet Laraway took a 12-3 opening quarter lead on St. Thomas and led 20-5 at halftime. St. Thomas tallied two points in the second half.

Dakoda Joachim led the winners with 18 points while Taevion Chamberlain added 14. St. Thomas was led by Justin  Zumbahlen, Will Ochs and Mitch Bailey with two points each. St. Thomas finished the season with a 16-3 record.

In other scores, Lincoln Chester-East Lincoln won over Sidell Jamaica 41-18, Pontiac St. Mary's downed Lowpoint-Washburn, 31-25, Bloomington Cornerstone defeated Griggsville Perry 37-33. In semifinal play, Pontiac St. Mary's won over Lincoln Chester-East Lincoln 35-32 and Joliet Laraway bounced Bloomington Cornerstone 42-18.

In the championship game Thursday, Pontiac St. Mary's (24-0) will take on Joliet Laraway (15-2) at 7:30 p.m. The third place game will feature Lincoln Chester-East Lincoln (18-3) against Bloomington Cornerstone (16-4) at 6 p.m.
