Hearts Post Big Win Over Newton; Other Tuesday Scores

The Effingham Hearts shot the ball very well Tuesday night as they defeated the Newton Eagles, 64-35 in action at EHS Gym, as heard on 979 XFM.

Effingham shot 58% from the field, making 26 of 45 shots including three of six three-point tries. The Hearts made nine of 15 foul shots, turned the ball over just 10 times and grabbed 24 rebounds.

Newton, struggling through a tough season, hit just 11 of 33 shots for 33% and made just eight of 17 foul shots. The Eagles turned the ball over 20 times and pulled down just 17 rebounds while making three of 10 three-point shots.

The Hearts scored early and often, leading 16-5 after the first period and outscored the Eagles each quarter, leading 33-13 at halftime and 45-21 after three quarters.

Braydon Bone, who had a great shooting game, finished with 21 points to lead all scorers. Bone, who hit on nine of 11 shot attempts, also led Effingham with five rebounds. Grant Wolfe also had a nice night with 15 points on five of nine shooting. Michael Carie also finished in double figures with 10 points. Also for Effingham: Sean Zerrusen five, Jared Minor three, and Kyle Morrow, Reed Schafer, Michael Woltman, Brent Beals and Brady Scott with two apiece. 

Newton was led by Collin Harris with 12 points. Also for Newton: Tim Weber eight, Mitch Jansen seven, Nicholas Cartright four, Preston Street two and Kyle Vahling and Joe Stone one apiece.

Effingham improved to 14-6 on the season, while Newton fell to 6-17.

Effingham won the JV game 84-27. Drew Vasquez and Mason Hull each scored 11 points and Trevor Kreke scored 10.

The Hearts head to Mattoon for Apollo Conference action on Friday night.
