Frosh/Soph Boys, Girls Basketball -- Jan. 31

TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham picked up a win and suffered a loss in the Apollo Conference Girls Freshman/Sophomore Basketball Tournament Saturday.

In the opener, Taylorville downed Mount Zion 56-24. The second game went to Effingham over Mount Zion 42-10. The Hearts took a 28-7 halftime lead and never looked back. Damron scored 11 for the Hearts and Depoister added eight.

In the second contest, Taylorville defeated the Hearts 60-24. The Hearts trailed 25-3 in the opening quarter and never recovered. Depoister scored 10 for the Hearts.

In action at Mattoon, Salem defeated Mattoon 48-24, Charleston then downed Salem 63-53 in overtime. Charleston won over Mattoon 70-39.

This Saturday at Charleston High School, Mattoon will face Mount Zion in the fifth place game at 10 a.m., Effingham will take on Salem for third place at 11:15 a.m. and Charleston will face Taylorville for the championship at 12:30 p.m.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis captured both victories over Effingham in boys freshman/sophomore action Saturday.

T-town was a 53-44 winner in freshman competition. The Wooden Shoes edged ahead 22-18 at halftime then had a a 10-8 edge in the third quarter.

Hardiek scored 23 for the winners. Effingham was led by Ryan Sandifer and Mason Hull with 15 points each.

In the sophomore contest, T-town was an 89-56 winner. Hartke scored 23, Belleville 19 and Brent Bueker 15 for the winners.

Effingham was led by Kreke with 30 points.
