TEUTOPOLIS -- Teutopolis High School put together a great third period run and nailed its free throws in the final quarter to pull out a 50-37 victory over Effingham in girls basketball action Friday evening at J.H. Griffin Gymnasium.

Both teams had opening quarter jitters before a good crowd. T-town finally edged out to a 9-6 lead on a three-pointer and two free throws by Shelby Thompson. The Hearts were having trouble with the Wooden Shoes defense and coughed up the ball six times in the opening quarter and nine by halftime.

But the Hearts started to find the range in the second quarter as Jantzen Michael nailed a three-pointer and a basket before putting in two free throws and another bucket for nine points. Shelby Nunamaker connected on a basket to give the Hearts a 22-20 halftime lead.

T-town found the range on only four of 10 baskets while the Hearts were five of nine. The score was knotted four times in the second quarter.

Thompson connected to start the second half and tie the score at 22-22. Aly Armstrong knocked in a three-pointer and the Hearts went ahead 25-22. The score was tied at 25-25 and 27-27 before a Chelsey Hardiek basket put the Shoes ahead for good. T-town went on a six of 10 from the field tear and Thompson went to work, scoring eight points.

The Hearts, meanwhile, couldn't find the range and hit only one of 11 from the field and trailed T-town 36-27 going into the final quarter. From that point on it was a walk to the free throw line as the Hearts dug themselves in deeper and deeper.

T-town hit 10 of 14 from the free throw line and Thompson added to her score to finish with 20 points to lead all scorers in the contest. Also in double figures was Hardiek with 10. Hardiek, however, left the contest in the final period when she went down hard on her left knee.

"We settled for outside shots in the first half," said T-town Coach Laurie Thompson. "Instead of going inside. We're very similar type teams. I thought Shelby had a good second half and did what I wanted her to do. Hardiek was out a week and came back and did a nice job but I don't know how she did after she went down. We'll have to evaluate her injury and hopefully she just twisted it. She's a pretty tough kid."

Michael led Effingham with 13 points while the next top scorer had four.

"Everything we talked about at halftime happened in the second half," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "I knew they would attack Jantzen so we have to have other people score. We're going to keep playing teams close but we can't seem to put them away.

"I thought we were patient and worked the ball well but someone besides Jantzen is going to have to step up and do it. They made three shots in a row and it was over."

Both teams now sport 13-13 records.
