Several area junior high boys basketball teams picked up regional championships Thursday evening. The winners advance to sectional competition Wednesday, February 4.

Class 7-1A Palestine Regional

Newton St. Thomas was the champion in this regional by downing Sigel St. Michael, 29-22.

St. Thomas advances to the Palestine Sectional and will take on Mulberry Grove at 6:30 p.m.

 

Class 7-1A Mulberry Grove Regional

Mulberry Grove claimed its own regional championship by pounding Stewardson-Strasburg 38-13.

Mulberry Grove held a 13-4 halftime lead and had a 16-8 third quarter surge. Show led the winners with 17 points while Mosley added 12.

Jesgarz led Stew-Stras with eight. Stew-Stras ends the season at 6-16.

Mulberry Grove advances to the Palestine Sectional against Newton St. Thomas.

Class 7-2A Assumption Central A&M Regional

Assumption Central A&M claimed its own regional title. The winners downed Nokomis 42-30.

Assumption Central A&M will host the sectional next Wednesday and face Effingham St. Anthony, a 53-40 winner over Altamont Wednesday night, at 6:30 p.m.

 

Class 7-3A Sullivan Regional

Teutopolis squared off against Blue Mound Meridian and won 35-11 to claim the regional title.

T-town had big scoring quarters in the second and third. Mitch Hemmen tallied 13 to lead T-town.

T-town advances to its own sectional at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday and will take on Marshall, a 40-28 winner over Robinson Nuttall Wednesday evening.

Class 7-3A Sullivan Regional

Class 7-4A Tolono Unity Regional

The winner of this regional, Mattoon, and the winner of the Urbana Regional, Urbana, will meet at the Effingham Sectional next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

 

At Carlyle

Effingham played in eighth-grade A and B competition Thursday evening and picked up a 71-45 win over Carlyle in A action.

Wolfe tallied 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the Mustangs. Rich added 12 points and seven boards. Jackson had four steals.

The Mustangs stepped out to a 23-6 opening quarter lead and the game was in the win column. Effingham is now 18-2 on the season and back in action as the No. 1 seed in its own regional Monday.

In the B game, Carlyle claimed a 30-22 victory. Effingham held a 15-12 halftime lead before Carlyle came back in the second half. The Mustangs were led by Poland with eight points. Ballman had nine rebounds and five steals. Marxman and Linders had five boards each.
