GREENVILLE -- Effingham Junior High School advanced to the championship game of the 67th Annual James Burke Memorial Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

The Mustangs beat Aviston 44-20. Effingham took a 17-5 opening quarter lead and led 28-10 at halftime and 42-12 going into the final quarter.

Wolfe tallied 23 points while Rich added 12. Lee pulled down 10 rebounds and Bushur had five boards.

In the second contest, Carlyle was a 38-30 winner over Greenville.

Effingham will now meet Carlyle at 7 p.m. today for the championship. Aviston takes on Greenville at 6 p.m. for third place. St. Anthony faces Hillsboro at 5 p.m. for the consolation championship.

At Sigel

Altamont captured the championshp of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

Altamont downed St. Elmo/Brownstown 43-35 for the title. Biggs led Altamont in scoring with 11 points while Asplin added 10. SEB was led by Himes with nine points.

In the third place contest, Sigel St. Michael defeated Cowden-Herrick 36-30. Cowden-Herrick led 18-16 at halftime but St. Michael came back with a 20-12 second half run. Wolke led the winners with 20 points. D. Burks led Cowden-Herrick with 15.

The consolation championship went to Windsor over Dieterich 40-32. Three players hit double figures for Windsor, Beck and Miller with 12 each and Bennett with 11. Dieterich was led by Brummer, S. Bohnhoff and E. Bohnhoff with eight each.

At Newton

Jasper County picked up two victories over Hutsonville in regular season play Thursday evening.

Jasper County won the seventh-grade contest 44-26. Cox led the way with 15 points while Tharp added 12.

In eighth-grade action, Jasper County was a 45-40 winner. Zak Finn scored 17 and Conner Bierman 16.
