EHS Girls Move To 2-0, Newton Wins At LIC, Highland Scores

Effingham High School pushed its record to 2-0 in its own girls basketball tournament by beating Pana 40-30 Wednesday evening.

The Hearts edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead as Jantzen Michael connected for five points while Marranda Steffen added two baskets. EHS then pushed ahead 22-16 at halftime. Michael hit another three-pointer and put in three free throws for six points.

The two teams played to a 6-6 third quarter tie before the Hearts went out with a 12-8 run in the final period.

Michael finished with 18 points for the Hearts.

In the opening contest, Centralia defeated Greenville 41-27.

EHS and Vandalia are both 2-0 with Centralia at 2-1, Pana 0-2 and Greenville 0-3. Tonight's games feature Greenville taking on Pana at 6 p.m. followed by the Hearts meeting Vandalia at 7:30. The EHS game will be featured on KJ Country 102.3.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton moved into the consolation championship game with a 57-40 win over Casey-Westfield Wednesday evening in the Little Illini Conference Tourney.

The Eagles and Casey-Westfield played to a 13-13 opening quarter tie before Newton took off with a 17-6 second quarter run.

Newton continued that run into the third period, outscoring the Warriors 15-9. Kerner led the Eagles with 21 points, connecting on six baskets, five of those from three-point range, and four of six at the line. Hartrich also hit the double digit mark with 14 points. The Eagles improve to 14-9.

Newton will face Olney at 5 p.m. for the consolation championship today. Paris meets Lawrenceville at 6:30 p.m. for third place while Flora faces Marshall at 8 p.m. for the championship.

Highland Tournament

Three games were contested in the Highland Tournament Wednesday evening. Trenton Wesclin handed Hillsboro a 51-41 loss. Breese Mater Dei edged Breese Central 39-37. Troy Triad won over Belleville Althoff 61-58.

Today's games feature Teutopolis against Salem at 5 p.m. followed by Taylorville taking on Nashville at 6:30 p.m. and Highland facing Belleville West at 8.
